Hot Grips & thumbwarmer on '03 400i
#1
No more cold hands & thumb. Had to cut part of the stock thumb throttle off and fabricate a new lever to get it lower for clearance for the wiring...epoxied the Unlimited Parts thumbwarmer on with J&B Weld. Used the internal wire style Hot Grips so had to drill holes in the handlebar weights for the wires to go through. Installed a relay so there is power only when the key is on and mounted two toggle switches up on the consol to control high and low temp.

Not sure what you mean by "solid or hollow throttle". Handlebars are generally hollow but may have metal weights pressed or welded in....in my case I drilled 1/4" holes through the weights for the wires, as I preferred to use hidden wire Hot Grips. External wire grips are also available...see following site.
Hot Grips website
There are two different styles of thumb warmers....one is attached to the back of throttle and the other is attached to the front. I chose the front mounted style.

If you do a search on www.google.com using "hand warmers" or "thumb warmers" you will find more information.

I put on the 'Moose' hand and thumb warmers. I really like them. Nice rubber grips. really easy job, pretty good directions. I used only one switch and piggy-backed the hand and thumb warmer.
