Ok. I only had about 40-45 hours on my 2002 Speed. It had run like a champ! So here I am, first day at Glamis for the Thanksgiving holiday. I'm cruising down the sand highway in 5th gear, not over-revving or over-lugging the motor, just cruising. Out of nowhere, I hear a loud POP, followed by a spray of gushing transmission fluid. I downshift and pull the bike over, and kill the engine. I hop off the bike to check out this leak, and notice that a hole the size of my thumbnail has blown out of the case! Why, God, why?????

I've yet to find out what caused the damage, but my dealer tells me that he is going to give me a whole new motor. Sounds great! Nice to have a warranty, etc, but what the heck would cause that to happen???

I just want to know if anyone else has had, or has heard about any similar problems. The last thing I want to do is worry about something breaking every time I go for a ride.

I'd be bummed, like I'm sure you were!! That's the first tranny grenade I've heard of on the net. Your coming out good, but it sure picked a bad time to happen! I'm sure that motor will go back to the factory for investigation.

 

Yeah, it figures it would happen the first day. Thank god for spare bikes. I'm really interested to hear what would have caused that. I'll be sure to let everyone know.

 

I have heard that they had calibration problems with torque wrenches when tightening the bolts that hold the tranny in the case.That maybe the problem.Let us know.

 

My speed is on the way to the shop today for a blown motor. I was ridding sunday the 1st and i went to climb a hill just before the truck after a long ride and pop! I lost all power and my motor died I was like wtf? but i just hit the cluch and set the brake. I did the lilttle stuff like check to see if the kill swicth off or did I hit the key and then i hoped off to tell my buddy that it just stoped and saw oil and coolant every were. I figgard I need a pull back. And after a buddy pulled me back I was like what the h*** and tryed to turn it over and the motor just spun like a hole in the piston or a burn valve. I took the bike home and washed it off and now the dealer is open to day I will take it in. I hope it turns out all right.

 

Ouch! Let me know how they service you. (if they throw you a new motor, or what?) At least Cannondale has an awesome warranty policy.

 

Don't feel left out guys, mine is down right now too.

It didn't start after unloading it from riding all day. Had no compression. Dropped motor out and found that a cam lobe was wore off and a valve was dropped. Haven't tore down the rest of the way yet to see what else is wrong or why the valve is dropped. I hope it is nothing real bad.

It is over at R&S right now. Kyle has been a great help on this little adventure.

Hey guys, two of my riding buddies has a speed and cannibal and both have blown engines. The speed locked up tight. Mechanic couldnt get the piston out it was so bad. Cannondale told them to send entire engine back for a replacement. Pretty cool huh. The cannibal started making alot of engine noise, tore it down, found that a bolt was broke in tranny, piston skirts were all scratched, and the big thing was the lower rod bearing went out. you could actually lift the rod up and down on the crank. Bad stuff happenin with c-dales. Both machines were only two months old. My buds are really pissed.

 

Any word yet on the trans failure? I know a guy who knows a guy that is making new gear sets for the Dales. He is interested in what failed in your Speed.

 

I have not ridden my bike for a week now and I cant stand it. I took it in last tuesday and they said to bring it back on thursday. They tryed to start it saturday but did not get anywhere. They open back up tuesday so I will be in then giving the friendly reminder. I said I would do the grunt work ie. pulling the engine and like if needed. I can pull the motor in a nite and it might take them a day or two to get to it. I hope they can get to it asap so I can get back out ridding. We have a trip to Glamis planed for the week of Xmas but it does not look good for going. I will keep you posted.
