Default Snow ride in Michigan on my 700

All-

Just wanted to share with you how much fun I had last weekend on my SP700 in the snow. We got about 6-10" in northern MI over Thanksgiving weekend. What a blast. I pulled (3) adults on sleds up a very steep grade with no problem.. ... You might think this is no big deal, but, consider this: 3 adults weighing 150#, 170#, and 145# combined = 465#!! (on sleds) Pulled them up a very steep grade (i'd say about 30 percent or steeper (ground not completely frozen) on 6-8" of WET snow.... all this with no trouble at all.... except the people had a tough time hanging on to the tow strap. This is a fabulous machine.... ... Sure makes sledding a lot of fun, not having to walk back up the hill and all...

Also had a lot of fun towing 1 person (my nephew) at a time down the snowy trails at around 25mph w/ helmets of course. The only thing I regret is that I didn't have an uncle or dad with a quad when I grew up to tow me around. Oh yeah... all this on private property so I did't have to worry about traffic.

Who else has had fun in the snow??

I'm also planning on adding hand-warmers - has anyone tried this?? Can you recommend a brand??

Keep ridin' the BEST....

Hey Kevlar,

Where abouts is Empire located? I live in the southwest, and we got 3 or 4 inches the other day. Haven't been for a ride yet, but did get to plow the driveway. Hehe. We have a camp up by Cadillac and make it up 3 or 4 times during the winter. Too much stuff keeping me busy around here else I'd be running the trails. Love riding in the winter.

I am in Northeast Oklahoma and I am sitting here watching it "flurry" right now. Last night, the weathermen said to expect 6" plus of snow. We got rain. The cold front didn't arrive early enough to give us any accumulation at all. I was gonna take off work today to play in it. I sure am bummed out.

Dusty-

Empire is located 25 miles west of Traverse City, on the coast of Lake Michigan, right in the middle of Sleeping Bear Dunes Nat'l lakeshore. It is a beautiful place. I used to live there full time, Unfortunately, Empire is my 2nd home, during the week I live and work in the Brighton Area. I spend most of my weekends in Empire though. I ride mostly on private property. Not too many "legal" trails to ride...... ..... lots of trails that fall in the "non-legal" category. They are state owned snowmobile trails that are great for riding --- but DON'T get caught. I know there is several other guys on the forum from Michigan. Maybe next summer, we should organize a ride?? I'd like to meet some of the like-minded individuals that are on this forum and do some riding.

Oh yeah.... I'm about an hour from Cadillac --- I drive right through there on M-115 on my way to Empire almost every weekend. Where is your cabin?

Kevlar1,

You can try any of the major brands are far as handwarmers are concerned. I have not heard any negative feedback on particular ones and I will soon be in the market as well for some since even down here in New Mexico it gets cold in the winter...ride on

hey kevlar,

we got about 24 inches during thanksgiving week, but now it's settled to about a foot. great riding! i had hot grips brand grips on my sp 500(sold), they were easy to install and worked great, although i shoud have got the thumb warmer too. i'll be getting them for the sp700 for sure.

you should try riding in the U.P. sometime! in case you don't know, the trails are open unless marked closed, instead of your trails in the L.P. which are closed unless marked open. lots of great riding up here. very few closed trails. it's about time to put the atv's away for the year but next spring, look out!!

Yoopermike:

I usually ride about twice a year in the UP (mid summer and fall). I love the riding up there. Usually, I ride in the Paradise / Whitefish point area. There really is some great trails and beatiful views of Superior. I also have ridden near Kinross - I liked the trails better around Paradise. We are sooooo lucky to have the UP open for riding (mostly)..... hopefully, people will continue to respect the rules, stay off private land, and tread lightly. We all must do this to keep our wonderful trails open to wheeled ATV's in Upper MI. We are really limited as to where we can legally ride in the LP. Let's make sure that the same doesn't happen in the UP. I'm sure there is some great riding around Marquette too. I'd like to get over there sometime can you recommend where to look at?? I know the area (a little).

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I picked up a pair of hot grips last night -- found them @ cabelas for $39 -- good deal??. I'll be installing them this weekend. I overlooked the thumb warmer, though. I'll see if I can buy the thumb warmer separately. Thanks for the info.

Plastic hand guards are in the plans too. I do lots of riding in the woods w/ no trail -- those tree branches sure hurt when the smack you on the knuckles!

Hey,

Our property is near Luther, about 2 or 3 miles from the Little Manistee trail system. Not the best trails to ride but they are legal. We spend a lot of time canoeing during the summer months. The Pine river is a fun little river to paddle down. Yeah, I'm always looking for other folks to ride with.
Let me know what you think about the hot grips. I've never used them, but have heard the grips are too hard. That was a while back so they may have changed since.
