Here are the questions for an 84 Big Red...
1. What would cause it to smoke(worn rings?) and backfire?
2. If it is the rings how much would a new top end/gaskets cost if I decide to buy them?
3. What is the adjustment towards the front bottom of the carb for because it fell out?
4. Do you have to set the timing on it or does it not matter?

 

I know everyone says this, but I think a shop manual might help you. I have a 1984 Honda 200es (shaft drive model), I haven't had a problem like yours yet. The manual I have is: "Clymer Honda atc185&200 1980-1986" and the book number is M326.
Does your ATC smoke all the time? Before looking around for a new top end you might want to find a replacement for that adjustment screw that fell out. I have a picture of where the pilot screw is and from what you explained it sounds like that is the screw that fell out. This can make your engine smoke and backfire, I don't know exactly what it does but it is sensitive to the number of turns that it is screwed out of it's seating position. The manual also says the pilot screw should not be touched unless the carburetor was overhauled or misadjusted. I get the feeling it’s an important screw.

**** on clymers or haynes... what ever bull crap, get a honda SHOP manual, it will tell you everything you ever needed to know. and as for your smoking, that missing screw could be just the problem, it is your air screw.. your running way to lean and that is causing the smoke replace that and if it dosen't stop do rings and check valve clearance... run a hotter plug if you can, that always helps... parts to do all this wouldn't cost you more then 15-20 bucks if your a smart shopper

Hell I ain't made of cash either, I just don['t mind spending a couple extra bucks for good parts (books for that matter)

 

Then you should quit buying Danelle Steel novels,cylmers is not a bad manual just because it doesnt have EVERY little detail,Last time i checked a Honda shop manual,is like 10 to 15 bucks more,hell save a few??

 

I'm pretty sure that it smoked and backfired before the screw came out, but it might not have been adjusted right either. Do you know if there are valve guide seals on it and how would I adjust the valves if I decide to? If I got new rings would I have to replace the piston too? Also what is the best way to compress the rings when putting the cylinder back on? Thanks for the help.

 

To address your question three wheeler, If you replaced your rings, it does not automatically mean that you have to replace your piston, but it is a good idea. As fas as adjusting your vavles, it would be better to have your local shop do it unless you have experience with this type of woork, thewn a simple manual (i.e. clymer, Haynes... ect) can walk you through this process.
