That's usually caused by low fluid or water in the hubs.
Transmission fluid will work, although I'm not sure its any better than the Polaris oil. Personally I like to use Mobil 1 synthetic trans fluid in mine.

If there is any evidence of moisture when you drain the hubs, re-fill, drive around a while, and change them again. This usually will get it working properly again.
There are a lot of things that COULD be causing this:
magnetized armature plate
warped plate
old, low, or contaminated fluid (most common)
wrong preload in bearings
weak gator spring

It's not normal. I don't know who you talked to, but I have 7200 miles on my Xplorer, and can turn doughnuts in 2wd with no fear of it kicking into 4wd, yet when I hit the switch, the 4wd works every time. Something somewhere has to be out of spec, and it could be as simple as too tight of preload on the wheel bearings.

well we've had out polaris 500 for about 3 or 4 years now and its done that ever since we've owned it, you could just be driving along with it in four-wheel and have it jerk to one side and get really hard to steer, I found that what makes it stop for a little while is if you put it in reverse and back up a little with it, its always worked for me anyways.
