I went to shift my AC 300 into 4X4 and nothing happened!!

I checked the linkage and it looks fine. I even tried to move the lever on the side of the front diff to see if it would shift into 4 wheel drive and still nothing. Could I have broken my front diff?

Has this happend to anyone else? Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

 

I fixed it. Very simple fix. There is an arm attached to a shaft coming out of the front differential, all I did was "move" it forward so the 2-4 selctor handle would move the arm all the way.

In doing so, I found out that I also have a locked front end too... cool. Is this how you "lock" the front end?

yes all you have to do is mess with the arm on the diff box. if you have locked then it will have no 2X4 but it will always have 4X4. i did a few little mods to my old one so it had all 3: diff. lock, 4X4 (3X4) and 2X4. its not to hard

the only thing is your shifter **** will pull out about an inch to an inch and a half more than it is now so a little bit of the cable will be sticking out of the fender
no big deal ive had no trouble and it was about a year and a half ago when i did it .

oh ya and basiclly all you modify is the cable end and turn the shifting arm on the box ill give more details in my emails

Its easy to make it full posi- all you have to do is:
1. unhook the shift linkage rod
2. shift the diff into full posi and push your 4x4 handle all the way to the fender
3. measure the difference between the two (mine was about an inch)
4. remove the shift rod, make an alignment mark in the middle of the longest straight part of the shaft and cut it in half
5. then find a piece of pipe and cut it a little longer than the length you measured and insert it to make the shaft longer
6. align your marks and weld!
7. Reinstall and now you have 2, 3 and 4 wheel drive.
If the alignment is off a little don't wory you can tweek the rod a bit and make it perfect. I have found when shifting into posi you may have to roll a little and when shifting out you may have to back up a bit. Other than that it works awesome! If you don't mind having it in 4x4 all the time you can just adjust the arm on the diff back and then have 3 and 4 wheel drive with out all the hassle.

Are their any mods. for the 2003 400? I have been told that it is a limited slip front end and locks up when needd, And always seems to do that. please reply.

To my knowledge there is nothing out there for that diff design. AC now uses the same "torque sensing limited slip" front diff on every model 250 to 500 from 2002 on.....
