Polaris sportsman tire chains
#1
I do alot of ice fishing here in Maine and we are getting alot of snow early, if the snow fall keeps up I won't be able to use the ATV because of the depth of snow. I thought to combat this I would purchase some rear tire chains but I have a couple of questions.
1. Any brand better than the others?
2. Any precautionary advice?
Thanks in advance, Glenn

I bought my chains from my polaris dealer. They are 100% better than bare tires but once you get stuck the rear tires will only dig a hole and then you gotta push.
The chains I have are called "V" chains because they have V shapped links that go across the tires that provide you with the traction you need. They cost me about $64 from the dealer. They have a few drawbacks though, they are hard to put on correctly and they need to be checked for tightness and I also had one connecting link bend out of shape and fall off. I'll have to put it in my vice and bend it back into shape.
Have you ridden on the bare ice before the snowfall? I'm in NY and we got dumped on yesterday and we are expecting more tonight!!!!!

a few winters ago i plowed snow with my old Sportsman 500 and used tire chains. i mainly plowed driveways and a few parking lots. after 65 miles of plowing, the tire chains were shot! the links were worn so thin that they broke links left and right. i tossed them in the trash. for me they were a total waste of $$.
for your application, maybe you will have better longevity.
i plow just as well w/o the tire chains.
i don't remember the brand, sorry.......

With the snow we've been getting here in central NY I'd bury my tires up to the skid plates with chains on. Today we are having a ice storm and even with the chains I'd have to get off and push several times before I reach the end of my 150 ft driveway.
And when I put it in reverse I have to rely on the chains for traction. While in forward I have AWD and that works great untill I get stuck in a low area then theres know way to move but push.
Right now I'm driving around with one chain on my left rear tire untill I can pound that broken link back into its original shape.
