Default Need stronger mid range on the 400ex!

I am getting killed by Z400s in races to the holeshot. They always get me by about 3-4 bike lenghts. If I get a pro circuit T-4 slip on, UNI filter, no airbox lid and rejet, will I get a stronger 2nd and third gear? I really need to make it down the straight faster and hit the turns in 3rd without it bogging down. Which is the strongers mid range pipe? Thanks!

I hate to give you the bad news but if you have a stock motor you will get beat by the Z most of the time. The water cooled engine from I have been hearing is faster. The Honda is a good quad, but the Z is just a little bit better. You do some engine work and you should be able to beat the Z till he does some engine work and then you are back were you started. I got to ride a Z the other day it was very fast, and it was stock.

Try a 14T counter sprocket.

Our EX has an FMF PowerBomb, Powercore muffler, and K&N. This gives a nice increase in power throughout the powerband. I disagree with the 14T sprocket, because then you will lose all your top end. Our EX is geared down slightly with a 1 tooth larger rear sprocket. Even a stock Z will literally annihilate it. The Z engine revs out so fast, that you are fighting a losing battle.

Look into a 416 kit, and an aftermarket pipe. The Zs will be left behind.

Sounds like you are racing MX? YES NO? You dont need alot of top speed for MX from what i have learned. Mainly 2-4 gears are used. Put a pipe on it and pull the motor open and do some mods. Maybe a 416 or just basic head mods and a higher compression piston. Oh and definatly do the 14 tooth counter sprocket. It will change your bikes bottomr and mid range pretty drasticly. Sprockets are reasonably cheap so it is definatly worht testing.
