Anyone using Edelbrock Carb?
#1
I talked to them today and they currently have a Z400 carb in production. Should be ready by mid Feb. Does anyone here have any experience with an Edelbrock on their sport quad? I've read some good things, just looking for firsthand experiences.

When Suzuki built the DRZ400 dirtbike, they could have used any carb out there. What did suzuki choose? The Keihin FCR39. I feel that they should have transfered this carb to the Z, but price was a concern on the atv. I have heard (but haven't had the chance to investigate) that the intake and air box boot from the DRZ will work on the Z so you can use the 39 FCR. The FCR takes time to dial in, but is the best 4-stroke carb available today. I had a FCR35 on my 250x but went with the FCR39 for the 410 kit.
Edelbrock carbs are for the lazy man that doesn't want to spend the time it takes to jet it properly. I feel that performance is something that takes time to reach optimum power. I have messed with Edelbrock automotive carbs that use the same ideas as their atv pieces and have found that jet style carbs are more consistant and make more power. The fastest carbureted cars in the world use holley's which require jets.

I have one for my 426EX and it is pretty awesome. It may be easy to Adjust but the FCR can take a long time to get the jetting just right. I have a friend that has one and it took him allmost 2 weeks to get it right on his 440EX. The edelbrock adjusts automatically for the altitude you are in. It also has a constant power. If you lug it down just a little and hit the throttle it pulls it out instantly so I think it's well worth it plus it is cheaper costwise than the FCR.

I ran one FOR A WHILE on the 400EX. The top end was FURIOUS, but I couldn't fine tune it (it only has one circuit) for the low end. It was BOGGY ON THE BOTTOM END!! I talked to the Edelbrock guys endlessly, and they were NO HELP AT ALL!!
Once I needed some quick power on a big double jump, and it bogged and I came up short (fortunately I just cased it and didn't go in nose first). The carb let me down!! So, I pulled the Edelbrock off and have never looked back . Now it is sitting on a shelf in my garage, where it can do no harm. I'm not going to make the same mistake on the Z.
