Trail Tech lighting for the DS
#1
Hey all, since I received somany compliments at Glamis last weekend on my light setup I wanted to offer a little information here just incase you decide to get these little jewels. I bought my X-bar, riser, light set up at Alba for about 220bucks...Saturday night I noticed that my 50W spot side was flickering and eventally quit altogether. For the past three days I've been trying to talk to someone at Alba to see if there was any warranty on this item...I got stuck on hold for a tremendous amount of time for the first two days...today I musterd the courage to try a different approach and finally got thru to someone. No warranty and the guy was telling me 45bucks for a new light...I told him I only needed the bulb/lense not the shiny housing it fits in...he must have been thinking I had more money than sense cause he said it again, 45bucks...long story short...I called Trail Tech direct and talked a very friendly young lady that answered the phone on the second ring and told her my delimma. The bulbs are less than 6bucks ea. so I ordered three spots and two floods (no charge on shipping as a courtesy) for grand total of 29bucks. I hope it was a fluke that the light burned out so quickly (three days of ridingisgust but if it wasn't I'll have to figure out a way to reduce the vibration at that point. Hope someone can benefit from this little story...

Good job Jim. I should have asked you this out at glamis but, Did the directions say anything about upgrading the stater? I hope it wasn't needed cause I really liked your set up and wants to get me a set.

I have a 2000 DS. The stock stator on all DS model years is 290 watt. Ricky Stator says "that's all the stator can take. You can't add any more through a re-built stator".
Here is what I'm running for lights; Total = 230 watts.
Two TrailTechs - 50w each. One spot, one flood.
Baja light kit from a Baja DS. (Two 35 watt)
Stock headlight 55 watt low, 60 high beam. I was running a 100 watt headlight for a while but wanted to make sure I had enough electrons for running the motor and putting something back in the battery.
I installed a seperate switch (Marine grade) for the Trailtechs.
Everything works great. No burnouts on any bulbs yet and I have about a dozen, Glamis, night rides on them. I love the TrailTech setup and highly recommend it. (I'm the one who finally convinced them to make us a bar clamp.) Their computer is also on my DS and it's great for keeping track of everything. I bounced the TrailTech data off a GPS (who was on the same ride) and it was spot on for average speed and total miles.
I believe the stator reaches max output at around 3k so I don't usually run the Trailtechs unless I have the RPM's up.
It's ok to run all the lights for short periods of time at less than 3k RPM. It just pulls from the battery during that time.

I've talked to the lady at Trail Tech a few times & they are great!!
The lights rock!! I asked a guy I was riding behind on a night trail ride at sahara why he kept looking behind him, he said I had so much light he thought a buggie was coming up behind him~!!!
Did you know they are making HID lights that should be on sale in a few months????
Here's a drawing of what they'll look like an engenieer sent me
Here's a pic of the prototype they sent me
I'm gonna have to get a set of these!!!
