your nasty banshee
#1
It seemed to me for the longest time that porting was a very small feature for me. I thought that it was very common mod for a new banshee owner to add this to your very expensive list that you so dearly wanted, so when you drag your frinds you can take them by surprise and whoop major ***.
So here I am stuck with no money and a half-year-old 2003 banshee and a blown crank seal. My dad doesn’t have very much time lately and has been sick so we cant just take it apart in a day and put it back together. It will be apart for a while if we don’t choose the right time to do so it doesn’t get left apart for a half of a year (like my 250x that’s almost finished from when I seized it last year) that’s how I got my banshee)). This time i am going to do it right and get it all done right.
I wanted pipes from the first second I got my banshee, 500$ is too much.
To tell you the truth this sport is the biggest money sucker ever.
I am preparing myself for some money saving. So these are my plans.....................
My first mod will be to pipe it I am really thinking about the fmf SST 's. I was talking to my shops mechanic about them and he said that all of the best bikes he has built had the SST pipes on it
There are other great pipes out there but I am looking at pipes that are usually best for more of a built quad and not just the most bolt on power at one time, like for instance I hear that the pro-circuit, is one of best pipes you can put on at first, rather than buying pipes and adding more performance parts that will keep pumping the juice
I want a good air filter rather than something that i am going to keep replacing>this will probably be a last minute choice. What do you run and how has it been?
I know that porting will make it heat up quicker so I was thinking about getting one of those cool heads. I really don’t know much about cool heads so please help me out!!
Does pro design make a good head? Is around 270$ a cheap head or is that the average price?
Getting ready for the port:
Instead of bringing my whole bike to have it ported y don’t I just bring them my cylinder, I hear it would be a lot cheaper to do!
I found this advertisement in Atv-action and it was for some company called 4 wheel thunder. =
Heres the ports and prices
Banshee cylinder porting
Porting gas alcohol cost
Mach 1 60-65hp 65-70hp $350
Mach 2 65-70hp 70-75hp $475
Mach 3 70-75hp 75-80hp $575
Mach 4 80-85hp 85-92hp $675

Is this excessive hp or is it normal?
Next I hear that you need high compression piston & rings
What r the price on these and what’s the best kind?
How is reliability?
With out buying everything at once and still porting what’s the best way to go?
Thanks for reading
Please correct me on anything that sounds wrong

I had Eric at 4wthunder port me a set of cylinders a while ago and they ran really well, yes those HP numbers seem pretty accurate. Now if you are on a budget you might want to reconsider the idea of doing everything at once becuase it gets expensive real fast, if you want your engine to produce the advertised power and still be reliable you will have to follow certain rules.
1.After market pipes are a must for ported engines, i wouldnt use anything but CPIs for ported engines but that is up to you and your engine builder.
2.You want stronger pistons for the new found power (most shops will use Wiseco pro-lites).
3.You do not need to buy an after market head, you can get your stock one modded and it will work just fine unless you are planning on running very high compression.
4.You will have to get your reed cages ported and some new reeds most likely TDRs or go the expensive way and by some V-Forces reeds but they arent really needed.
5.In most cases the advertised hp is obtained with the use of some bigger carbs from 28mm to 35mm depending on the engine builder preferences.
6.It is highly recommended to get your crank trued and welded for the increase in power produced by the new mods.
7.The use of an after market air filter set up is a must even for a stock Banshee for some obvious reasons but with those mods you will have to run some type of modded air box,if not you wont get the power you hoped for.
8.You will have to run different timing either by installing a degree key or buying an adjustable timing plate, this will have to be discussed with your engine builder.
Those are all the parts and mods needed that i can think of right now, i may have forgotten a few things so sorry if i did.

Here is what I suggest for the Best money can buy.
CPI or T-5 pipes, jet kit and air filter kit.
Timing advance
true and weld crank (becomes necessary for reliability from here on)
Cool head or mill stock head
porting
Check out my site, I port banshee cylinders for $300. The mods listed above will yield mid 70's HP with stock carbs. Larger carbs don't do much unless you plan on using alcohol.

675 for a top end port job? somebody call the police cuz they are robbing you. There are better shops out there that yield better prices. Like these other fellows said i would agree with most everything they say. The pipes should match the port job, if your running a high hp top end motor then run CPI's or GRR pipes. If you like midrange or bottom end i would not run these pipes. If your on a budget you dont need the head right now, id do the porting, cut the head, pipes, weld that crank!!!!!! pistons, intakes and then carbs. Then you need to put power to the ground so invest in some tires home boy!

How about, since its new and you havent ridden much, you just get some pipes and a K&N and be happy with it for awhile?? The more a bike is built the less reliable it it.. Doesnt sound like youve dont much riding lately...
