Your choke cable may be sticking or incorrectly adjusted. If its under warranty take it back to the dealer,if not:
Turn on the choke.
Remove the cable housing from the carb.
Holding the end of the cable in your hand, let off the choke and remove the plunger+spring.
Remove the other end of the cable from the lever in the housing on the handle bar.
Make sure the cable slides freely in the housing if not it may need to be cleaned+lubed or replaced.
Reattatch the spring and choke plunger to the new or lubed cable.
Apply a light coat of grease or spray the plunger+spring with thrust or other lube.
Reinstall the cable in the lever housing and the carb.
MAKE SURE THERE IS FREEPLAY IN THE CABLE as in when you feel the plunger bottom out in the carb the lever shouldn't quite be in the off position.
The only way to feel this slight release of pressure is with a well lubricated cable+plunger.

Actually, that's about what I get with my 500. I have 27" tires, though, which may factor in to the equation.
Nobody every said that wheelers were economical!
You have the right idea...if you're riding any distance...bring extra fuel.
