Default What's the Best and Worst Thing About owning a Raptor?

I'm on a long pursuit to possibly get a sport quad with electric start and reverse. So, Raptor owners, what's the best thing, and the worst thing about owning a Raptor?

Thanks.

Best thing POWER, and the worst anything you buy from yamaha costs an arm and a leg. But if ya want to play you have to pay.

For my use, which is trailriding, the Raptor is perfect. Plenty of power with the chassis made for the woods rider....downsides? 01 Trannies will fail along with the carbs blowing off and the 1-way starter bearing fails on all. Reverse is only more weight and something else too fail.....electric starter is too.

The best thing is the power once you start to from mild to extreme mod. ypu will never stop unless you don't like the power....

The worst thing is having 01 raptor that causing tranny problems. mine done twice. this time to upgrade to 02 gears set.

Get a newer one and don't get 01 unless it got 02 gears in there....

It's a double edged sword - its best feature is also its worst. Seems EVERYBODY is making some great mod for the Raptor - this is a good thing but it also keeps ya chasing that golden ring - it never ends It's nice to have the huge aftermarket excitement but my wallet hurts !

Desracers....did'nt you previously install Fortins? I was thinking you had them anyway.

I did have Fortin gears install that where 4th gears of the dog tooth shatter 2 out of 3 dog tooth broke off. All Sam coes would do is replace the 4th gears no charge. So what the point to reinstall same gears and might do all again down the road. I have been told that Fortin have know to fail on rare occasion. I thought they were billet gears and they are not. They are forge gear. so much for the $$ I put into the tranny. It put a dent in my wallet for short time. It mean I have to work hard on the side job to pay for the damage..... LOL That life.

So I am in the process to upgrade to 02 gears, hope they can weld the hole in the case since it close to the split case. The hole is about 1/2" dia.

my opinion:

best - styling and feature of reverse, 660 big block displacement!!

worst - reverse, causing 2nd gear failure. starter, replaced one-way sprag assembly 2 times in a year and a half, now the gears that go between the starter drive and the crankshaft needs replaced.

my opinion once again:

Fortin gears are over priced and they WILL break! I speak from experience.
When they do break, they will glady replace them at their cost which is still very expensive. Why buy them again if you all ready proved that they WILL FAIL? You know what they told me was the cause of the gear to fail??? It was the use of REVERSE, yes...reverse!!. Imangine that, why didn't they tell me that is why the stock gears failed instead they blame it on weak design and fortin racing gears is the fix.
it is a weak design by yamaha and that is why they make the second gear with 4 dogs instead of 3 now....o and by the way they still come with reverse!!!!!!!

I believe there are lots of good aftermarket parts out for the raptor, just be carefull and make wise decisions on your purchases.......and ask what they will do if a product fails (warrenty, free replacement) , or learn from your experiences as i have.... Just curious....can someone tell me what the one-way starter bearing is??? And what does it do, or not do, when it fails?? I'm asking because my dads Rap has been acting funny lately. We think the clutch might be going out. Thanx for the help.
