I've heard about the 2001 Raptor tranny problems. There are a lot of '01 Raptors for sale in Florida. I think it sounds like I should look at 2002 Raptors instead and stay away from them unless the seller has documentation of replacing the tranny with '02 parts.

There's definitely no disputing the Raptor's power. What about the handling? Are they tippy and top heavy like some people say? Is it necessary to widen it's stance for the best handling?

They didnt get the name "Tippy Raptor" for nothing,. With suspension dimensions smaller than a 400 EX, combined with a higher seat height = Tippy!

You just can't beat that power, it is a little tippy but you learn to compensate real fast.

 

Roostking is JUST drunk what does he know?? Roost just stick too lawn and garden and let raptor owners explain raptors....LOL
There not as tippy as people make them out to be. I flipped the front rims and added wheel spacers to the rear and it made a huge handleing difference

That's cool. A little tippy in stock form, but with a little mod gets it going better in the corners. I did the same thing with a Blaster I used to own. I just got different wheel offests to make it an inch wider in the front and back. It made a huge difference. I think most quads are too narrow in stock form, anyway.

 

What I have learned through all the threads I have read:

If your shorter like myself then the raptor is not tippy because the
weight of your head is closer to the center of gravity. If your over 6
foot and you have a big head you will still have fun its just shorter
guys will always handle better and will be at the finish line first.

Start the Raptor in neutral and not in gear with clutch pulled. I think this is easier on the starter. Thanks Garyc660r

If you have an 01 don't use reverse or if you must make sure you do it
slow and hear the gears doing there switch over and just don't slam and

you said a mouthfull. i have an 01 raptor with fortin gears. i had sparks do the gear change when he was in my motor. to date i have not had any problems with my one-way starter bearing...then again...i dont start my raptor in gear. from day one i did not like the way it felt when i did it...so i stop starting my raptor in gear.....as for using reverse,, i banged the tranny once and realized that to use reverse you had to go slow and make sure the trany was in the desired gear before i took off. you have to go easy with switching from 1st to reverse and back with a high torque motor like the 660 r.....

Come on, I know someone knows about this!!! Someone help me out a little. You'd be helping a fellow Raptor owner out, not me, but my father. Thanx guys. BTW, it is an 01....so I've been worrying him lately about the tranny going out.

 

THE BEST THING ABOUT THE RAPTOR IS IN STOCK FORM THEY HAVE PLENTY OF POWER, BUT IF YOU PUT A PIPE ON IT ALONG WITH A CARB KIT AND K&N FILTER YOU WILL HAVE POWER UP THE WAZOO. I AM NO SKINNY MINNIE AND IT HAS GREAT PULL THROUGHOUT THE GEARS. A SMALL DOWNFALL WOULD BE THE PRICES ARE SUPER HIGH ON SOME THINGS. $18.00 FOR AN OIL FILTER THAT LOOKS LIKE IT CAME OFF MY LAWNMOWER IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE BUT I GUESS ALL THE BIKES ARE EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN TOO. ITS A GREAT BIKE..I WOULD DEFINATELY GET 1 OR 2.

Worst thing! Having to listen to the owners of every new quad that comes out say how they beat a Raptor by x amount of lengths! Notice how they always compare it to the king of the hill!
