Default 300 4x4 has no power, is this normal?

My 300 4x4 has no power in mud or snow. Even six inches of snow is asking alot. It has to be in mid-range 2nd gear or it will not turn the wheels. (high range is not even possible) If I try getting the r.p.m.'s up for more power it backfires and loses power, not alot but enough to be noticable. Top speed is 39 or 40, I know it's not built for speed but after 3rd gear it struggles to continue to accelerate and 4th and 5th gear hardly gain any speed. If I encounter any loose gravel or snow it immediately loses power. Any suggestions? It's a 2000, completely stock with 300 miles on it.

Thanks
Matt

I would check the carb float bowl vent line. This gets plugged or pinched under the seat from time to time. It is the clear tube. If that is clear verify that your air filter is clean. Make sure that if you clean it with solvent or soap that you reoil it. I would then check the plug. The ceramic should be tan. If it is black you are running too rich. A clogged air filter can cause this, a stuck fuel enrichner needle can cause this. With the engine warm, and idling, you should be able to kill the engine by turning the "choke" full on if it is working properly. If ithe plug is white you are running too lean. This machine should top out around 50 MPH on hardpack when running right.
