I wonder...

I wonder if the new Polaris 1,000cc Sportsman will be out before the Rubicon??? LOL I doubt that Polaris would give us a 700cc motor on a new quad, much less anything bigger. I'll keep my fingers crossed...

My post was meant to be tongue in cheek (a FRIENDLY bash at the Rubicon, and a little fun with the rumors of a 700-750cc engine in a new Polaris). I know that Polaris, or any other manufacturer, will not produce a 1,000cc motor for the general public any time soon, if ever. The liability would be too high to make it cost effective for the caompany. You just might be able to bore and stroke an 800 out to 1,000cc's (one of the snowmobile motors) but it would probably be very expensive and hard to do.

This is pure speculation, but I keep wondering if Polaris isn’t going to announce a new (or improved) machine about the same time the Rubicon debuts. From a marketing perspective this would seem to be a logical move, and from the same perspective a bigger motor in the Sportsman seems just as logical. This is the kind of strategy the auto makers used when there weren’t so many playing the game. Of all the ATV manufacturers Polaris seems to have learned the most from the way autos are marketed. One of the reasons they sell so many machines is they’ve learned to make desirable improvements more regularly than the other nameplates. These improvements motivate customers to trade up, just like with cars.
Personally I’d rather see the 500 motor “wrung out” to it’s full potential than a 600 or 650. We know things can be done to the 500 motor to improve its performance because they did it to the HO. Why increase the CCs if this motor can be made to produce more power without loss of dependability? I’ll tell you why, because the buying public isn’t going to get as hot for an improved 500 as they will for something that says 625 or 650 on it, even if the 500 might have more power than a de-tuned 600+ motor. That’s just the psychology of it, whether it makes sense or not. Too bad.
We’ll just have to see what happens. If Polaris announces a new quad or bigger Sportsman about the same time as the Rubicon to steal some of its thunder, I’ll be able to say I told you so. If they don’t I’ll be saying it was a good marketing opportunity missed.
