Default 94 400 explorer transmission noise

My 94 explorer transmission make a popping sound when the shifting lever is put into high or reverse. Can the shifting rods be adjusted longer to force the slide gears closer togather. A dealer told me the transmission had to come apart and the slide gears needed replaceing. Need help?

One end of the shifting rod is right hand threaded, the other end is left hand threaded. After loosening the jam nuts, turning the rod one way or the other has the effect of lengthening or shortening the linkage. You will have to just experiment with how much to move which rod which way.
For what it is worth, I had to re-adjust the linkage on my Xplorer at about 5500 miles or so, and it is still doing fine at 7250 miles now.
