My '99 has the original chain and has just now ran out of adjustment. I keep it loose to avoid breaking the tranny and a tight chain stretches faster. It made the final stretch on yesterday's ride and actually feel off the rear sprocket. I was already in four wheel drive and thought it was driving kinda funny. The chain was so loose that I just sat it back on the sprocket. It was good for the last hour of riding but now it's time for a new DID chain and sprockets.
Also make sure your swing arm bolts and rear axle bearings are all tight. Anything loose in that area changes the chain tension quite a bit.
