CR500-250R engine hybrid
#1
Has any one ever tried to install a CR500 cylinder onto a 250R base engine? Is there any one who possibley do this? I have a chance to buy a CR500 engine with a blown tranny and I wondered if this is possible. I do know about the 400 pilot conversion which is basicly the same set up, swapping a cyl over to a 250 base engine. Any info would be helpful.

Howard Richards of R.E.D. (Hollis Center, ME) and I have looked into venturing into that.
There's some potential, but.....the large bore and small stroke could mean that it would'nt really become that potent of a motor. There's some mixing and matching of some components, some Honda, some Rotax...and you do get a larger motor.
I really feel that the best biggest available bore and stroke set-up would have to be the Pilot cylinder. It's proven to do well.
You know it's not to say that the graft wouldn't work, but the massive amounts of machining, welding, and horrendous port modifications required, really make it tough to commit to doing something like that.
But again, nothing ventured, nothing gained.....

why not just put the 500 into your' frame? i've seen a few, and other than some concern about vibration fatigue, it seems a fairly straight forward deal. i've rode one that looked like it came from the factory, and it hauls. if you ride one you may decide to fix the tranny and go that route.

You would be much better off using the CR500 motor and just fixing the tranny. First of all, to have that 250R bottom end converted to accept a CR500 cylinder would cost you a ton of $. You could easily fix the CR tranny, or have someone fix it for a lot less money. Plus, you don't have to worry about something that was machined or fabricated failing. I think that the CR500 motor would fit very easily into the frame anyway, and with a lot less labor than converting just the cylinder.
