The 4wd button on my 97 Sportsman 4x4 is not lighting up. I put a test light on the back of the switch and it wasn't getting and power. What could I check to see if the problem is in the switch or do I have a problem somewhere else? My neutral light is not working could this have something to do with my problem?

 

I had the same problem with my 99 sportsman 500. It was a bad switch on the transmission, close to where the shift rod connects to the trans. There are 2 switches on the trans, one near each of the shift rods. Does the switch light up in either high or low range? That should indicate which switch is bad. Hope this helps.

 

I don't think I checked it in low range. I'll give that a try this evening.

 

It was the switch on my gear shifter that was bad. I jumped it out of service and now I can put it in 4wd in reverse without pushing the overide switch. The only problem is my neutral and reverse lights don't work.

 

I assume it was the high range/reverse switch that was bad and not the low range? Are you going to replace it or leave it bypassed? If I remember right it was about $30. FYI, the 2 switches are NOT the same.

 

On the scematic the switch is in the shifter housing. It is shown as one switch with one input and three outputs (fwd, rev and neutral) if I remember right. I will leave the switch jumped out for now. How hard is it to replace the switch inside the shifter?
