Default Sportsman 700 starter ???'s

Went riding last weekend and had a good day. 25 miles of riding. get home clean up atv and put it in garage. Go out today and start it and there is this horrible noise coming from the starter. The starter will start the bike but it sounds like it is going to come apart at the seams. I have two weeks left on my 6 month warranty so it looks like I'll be heading to the dealership tomorrow. Has anybody had their starter act up on them? I am pretty easy on the bike (not dousing it in big mudholes etc) and haven't sunk it any creeks so can it get gunk in it? I sprayed it off at the carwash to knock the biggest part of the mud off but I'm careful not to spray directly onto the motor and such. So....crap what gives?

I have a 03 Sportsman 600 and the starter will make this high pitch whining noise. Doesn't do it everytime and hasn't failed yet. I have 2 months left on my warranty.

The mechaninc at the dealer said it sounded like a bearing went bad in the starter. Don't know for sure yet, but he was tearing into as I was leaving. All of a sudden the extended warranty don't sound too bad until I found out it was $630.

My 02 SP700 starter also went out at 290 miles. It worked fine before I washed it and put it away. A couple of weeks later I went to ride it, hit the starter and nothing. No noise or anything. The dealer found that the bearing had seized. The starter must be serviced as a unit. The individual parts are not available. Luckily I have the extended warranty. I think the starter costs appx. $260.00.

I figured the starter to be pricey. Have you had any more probs from your starter since it was replaced?

I have not but I have not ridden it much. I did ride this past weekend, washed it and put it away. Hopefully it will be ok the next time I try tostart it.
