im trading my sons xr50 in for a quad, looking at a sportsman 90, '02 new, the price seems right at 1500 + the honda. is that a good quality bike for a 7 yr old and a 5 yr old to share?

foneguy,
the machine is a good machine but teh price for a used machine should be at $1500 by itself. Your just giving him a bike for free. If that xr runs it is atleast worth $500. I think I would negociate some more.

foneguy: If I read your post right, you are trading in an XR50 for a new '02 Sportsman right? Our '03 Sportsman was $2299 so the price sounds about right. One thing you should consider is that Polaris changed from an electric choke to a manual choke in the '03 model. From what I understand, they had quite a few problems with that electric one. You may be able to retrofit the new style choke but it would be a lot simpler and probably cost the same to just buy the '03 in the first place.
We sure like the Sportsman 90. I have a 9 year old son that weighs over 90lbs (future Minnesota Viking) and a 5 year old daughter who share the quad right now. The quad is not too small for him and not too big for her, so it is a great fit. We have used it in the sand and the dirt and it is a great performer. Also, it starts very easily and has not given us one lick of trouble. If they made a Sportsman 150-175, I would probably have to get that too. We are going with the TrailBlazer 250 when he is big enough.

its a new never used '02, went and got it too big for my little 5 yr old she cant turn, my boy loves it, now to retrain him to lose the motorcycle foot tapping. with the restrictor in , but wont that cause it to run crummy? just wondering, i looked in the owners manual to see where the restrictor was, when i took the pipe off the motor ther was no washer/restrictor, and at the silencer, according to the book, there is no set screw to undo to remove such restrictor. does the sp90 ('02) have such a thing?

Overkill, you're from Oregon and your son is a future Minnesota Viking? I'm from Minnesota and I'm wondering if your son would rather play for a team that can win! Ok, so we're not too happy with them at the moment, next year will be better!
The SP90 is a fine machine, the one we have has performed well and has enough power for every kid that rides it except my eldest (who's 13 and wants a Banshee - yeah, dream on, kid!).
