Warrior carb leakage
#1
Hey,
just bought a '97 Warrior. when the motor is idling, i noticed that there is gas running out of the drain tube of the carb. so i need to check the float to make sure it is closing properly so that the bowl doesn't flood over like this. but i haven't worked on a atv carb before. is there a write-up online that i could read before doing this? or could any of you guys give me a few tips for taking the carb apart and for things to check? also, is there anyway for me to tell what size jets are in the carb now?
here's something i don't understand: with the motor off, but the gas on, the carb leaks. with the motor off, and the gas off, the carb doesn't leak. but the motor will run, even with the gas turned off. what's the deal with that??
thanks,
bigmac

It will run till the float bowl is dry with the tank turned off (around 5 minutes). These carbs are very simple, but mine every once and a while decides to take a **** on my shoe with gasoline. Then it stops, I think after you ride a bit the float unsticks. Next time it does it try jumping up and down to jar it. If that dosent help I dont know what to say, you can take it apart and check the specs on everything but I doubt you will find anything wrong.

Hey,
wow, i had no idea it would run that long on just the float bowl. which explains why it ran for the 2mins that i messed with it.
the mechanic at the yamaha dealer told me that sometimes a piece of dirt or something will get stuck in the needle/seat and cause the bowl to over fill. or that the needle/seat could just be worn out. but before i pay $35 for new parts, i'd like to try to fix it. the whole reason i bought a newer quad is so that i didn't have to go broke replacing worn out parts.
thanks,
bigmac

done this too many times on my warrior. I would reccomend taking the airbox out of the warrior before taking the carb out, it will make your life a whole lot easier when you put the carb back on believe me. Have you ever worked on a carb before? Well if not i would get some help from someone who has because I can't tell you everything over a paragraph, somethings you need to be there. 1) take off airbox 2)take off both carb boots 3) take off top of carb cap(where the throttle cable goes into) be VERY careful not to lose any clips or springs out of there, be careful and put all the parts onto something clean. 4)after you do this you can take the carb out 5)now you can take off the float bowl (little bol on bottom of the carb) from the throttle body (rest of the carb). 6) now that you took the bowl off you should be able to see thje floats on the bottom of the throttle body, check for dirt and specifications, you should also clean the whole carb while you're at it. As for the jets there used to be a small print of the jet numer on the jets, may not be now but its worth checking. Again be very careful when you do this and if you need anymore help let me know,

Hey,
let's talk about step 3, removing the top cap of the carb where the throttle cable goes in.
not sure i understand that step. i've got the carb completely loose, except for the throttle cable. it seems to be attached by a small bracket on the front of the carb. i also see a flat lid/cap/plate on the very top of the carb, but it doesn't appear to have anything to do with the throttle cable.
if you don't mind, could you explain this step a little further?
many thanks,
bigmac

its different on different year models
Get the book, if you just want to get to the float though, just take off the bottom, only 4 screws hold it on and there is nothing to fly out in there. Then you tap that little pin that holds the float in place and you can get to the valve. Dont mess up the float height though.

Hey,
ahh man, i'm in such a bad mood right now. i'd love to throw this 4wheeler thru the window of the guy i bought it from.
two of the screws that hold the bowl on have the heads stripped. and the screw that drains the bowl is stripped too. and every other bolt is on there so tight that you'll strip something trying to get it off. (oil drain plug, lug nuts, etc) i want to find the last moron to work on this quad and punch him in the mouth. stupid people don't deserve to live.
i couldn't figure out how to get the throttle cable to come off, and i couldn't get the float bowl off, so i gave up and started putting things back together. but now, even with the fuel turned off, it's leaking a stready stream of gas out of the carb, and i've got no way to stop it. for the moment i pulled the fuel line and have got it draining back into my gas can. but considering there's probably 2gallons in the tank, it'll be draining through tomorrow.
btw: it's not just draining the bowl and stopping. the on/off switch is leaking too.
furious,
bigmac
PS: don't want to seem ungrateful, so thanks for the carb info. maybe it will come in handy at some point.

Stripped carb screws are common on quads, the manufacturers use real soft screws for some reason, the screwdriver has to fit perfect or they will strip after the first or second time round.
Make sure you arent putting the petcock on reserve, the lever should horizontal for it to be off.
Also its alot easier to take the cable off at the thumb throttle than it is at the carb (the plastic side piece has to come off the carb - more stripped screws)

Hey,
good thought, but no. the fuel switch is definitely on off. the switch must be bad cause there's a steady stream dripping from it. what i don't understand is that before i started messing with it this afternoon, the switch only leaked a drop or two. but when i put the carb back on and ran it for a few seconds, the problem got really bad. doesn't make sense cause i never did anything to the switch other than pull the fuel line off of it.
so how am i supposed to get these stripped screws out? and there's no need to put them back in. will the dealer have these screws, or is it going to be a whole rebuild kit?
thanks for the tip about disconnecting the throttle cable at the thumb throttle. i took off the plastic cover on the side of the carb, but didn't see any easy way of getting the cable unhooked, so i gave up and started putting things back together.
i haven't look at the thumb throttle yet, but what is the best way to disconnect the cable there?
thanks,
bigmac
PS: the good news is that i don't have classes next week, so i've got the entire week to throw tools around the shop.
