new atv bad deal ??
#1
I just bought a new big bear 400 from my local dealer. Brought it home and checked everything out . Started it up and began riding. After about 30 mins or so I started hearing a pinging sound coming from the motor, I looked down and saw that the pipe coming out of the head was glowing red.
So is there something wrong and do you think the motor is screwed ????

Took it back to dealer . Dealer had the yamaha mechanic check it out , He said it was fine.
But I've worked on alot of vehicles in my days and if a pipe/exhaust turns red within minutes of it running there is either a overloading of fuel or timing is off. In this case i just don't know.
Any Ideas or thoughts ?????

i got an 03 bigbear and i haven't seen that problem ummm theonly time i've ever heard about ping from a motor is when they run to lean and you get preigintion in the combustion camber which in car motors i know is because of hot spots on the piston or it's to lean which if kept runnin like that will put a hole in the piston now thats in car motors

I have noticed that my 03 big bear also has a slight pinging to it. I am thinking that it may be normal???

Same goes for atv's. Sounds like its lean or restricted exhaust. Either way I'd take it to a different dealer and have them look at it. If thats not possible then take it back to where you got it and ride it around and show them what its doing. Looking at it and getting the problem to act up is two different things. You need to make sure that they are riding it or have it on a dyno so its loading the engine before they diagnose the problem correctly.
