After the air filter is clean do I use regular motor oil
or specific air filter oil

luvthemud, first you say "NEVER NEVER NEVER use water to clean an air filter" then you say that it's OK to use water as long as you let it dry 24-48 hours. Is it you or your dealer that is confused on how to maintain an air filter?

plumber, I would use an air filter oil, because motor oil is too thick and is not as tacky.
Air filter oil is designed to be thin enough to let air flow through but sticky enough to catch the dust particles. Buy it in a spray can that way it is easier to apply evenly on the filter, no plastic bags to mess with.

i consider cleaning an air filter something that is done every now and then right before you drive the four wheeler, or if it gets clogged while driving, in that case I was told to never never never use water. if you have no plans of using the wheeler a while water would be fine but i don't want my wheeler sitting for a day waiting for the filter to dry. i guess we will have to agree to disagree but as long as my dealer tells me it is ok and i have warrenty i see no problems.

Cleaning the air filter is preventive maint. you may not notice the premature engine wear until two or three years down the road so what good is the 6 month warranty if you don't service your filter properly. Thanks for clearing up the NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use water deal.

who you callin a clown willis. if you look at your air filter there is a crankcase vent going to the filter also and that gives the filter the oiling it needs to keep the dirt from getting to the engine.and i check my filter every time i come back from rideing and clean it every hundred miles or as needed. and i've had no problums with it. when you take you filter out you will see the oil in the filter from the crank case vent and if you add more oil it will restrict its breathing makeing it run slower.PS snox314 how many miles have you put on you cat. or do you even own one. and yes i read my owner's manual compleatly.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif[/img]

You guys ought to spend a buck and call some of the more prominent racing shops and ask them how to clean a filter. Curtis Sparks Racing, TC Racing, Powroll Racing, Thumper Racing, Four Stroke Tech, Baldwin Motorsports, Duncan Racing and many others. These guys know how to do it!!! I would trust these guys over any local mechanic!!!! Especially the ones I have read about on this topic!!!!!

For the guy running his filter dry all I can say is good luck and start saving now for a new motor!!


The information below is copied from the UNI Filter Web page under their care and maintenance!!! Please READ CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS WITHOUT ANY DEVIATION!!!!! You don't have to use UNI products There are other companies such as Twin Air, Bel Ray, and others. Just make sure the products are safe for Foam Filters!!!!


FOAM FILTER OIL IS NECESSARY
FOR PROPER FILTRATION!


Your air filter is the lifeline to your engine......

Improper maintenance can result in engine failure.......

Please read the following instructions carefully to achieve maximum engine protection and performance.

Uni Filter Oiling Instructions
Remove the filter frame (if applicable) and saturate the foam element with Uni Foam Filter Oil.

UFF-16 Uni Liquid Oil: Pour into pan or tub, and dip the filter until there is complete coverage with oil. Next squeeze out all you can...(do not wring out) then dab filter with paper towels to remove excess oil. If your filter has a rubber flange, be sure to clean mounting surface free of oil.

UFF-100/104 Aerosol Filter Oil: Spray the filter inside and out until the filter has complete coverage with oil. Next work the oil into the foam using your hands. Repeat this step once more, and then dab filter with paper towels to remove excess oil. If your filter has a rubber mount flange, be sure to clean the mounting surface free of oil.

Clean filter frame, clean filter mounting surface and air box. Check air boot and mount to carburetor. Next reinstall filter frame (if applicable) back into the filter element. We recommend using sealing grease in our exclusive "Ultra Seal" grease groove.

Now you're ready to install the best air filter on earth!


Uni Filter Cleaning Instructions

GREASE CUTTING CLEANER IS NECESSARY FOR PROPER CLEANING!

Remove the filter frame (if applicable). Next saturate the foam element with cleaner.

UFC-300 Uni Foam Filter Cleaner: Spray generous amounts of Uni Cleaner on the inside & outside of the filter. Let it soak approximately 3-4 minutes. Rinse out the filter element in warm water until clean. A second application may be necessary for heavily soiled elements. Next you must let the filter dry completely. Very important! Re-oil per instructions, and you are ready to go.

Grease cutting cleaner: Products like Simple Green, dish soap, or mild solvents can be used if Uni Cleaner is not available at the time of cleaning. Pour cleaning solution into a bucket; dunk the filter in multiple times until clean. Rinse with warm water. Next you must let the filter dry completely. Very important! Re-oil per instructions, and you're ready to go.

Clean filter frame, clean filter mounting surface and air box.

Now you're ready to oil, and install the best air filter on earth!

i use the ac filter cleaner to clean my filter and when i go to clean it it's not dry it has oil in from the crank case vent in it. you can clearly see it's oid up. i put it in dry cause thats what the ac dealer told me to do. because the crank case vent give's it the oiling it need's. thats what they told meto do. and it's got 3 year warrenty so im not worryed.i clean it the way they told me to and that's good enuff for me.

Trying to explain air filter maint. to you and mudblaster is like talking to a stone wall. mudblaster the only reason you would have oil coming out of the crankcase breather is the crankcase is becoming over pressurized. This over pressurization is caused by a worn piston and rings letting too much of the ignition forces by the rings. So instead of just crankcase air coming out you now have oil being forced out also. Even if your theory was right very little oil would ever get on the filter since your carburator is sucking air past the breather in the opposite direction. THINK ABOUT IT.

P.S. mudblaster, snox314 and MINIMOTOR are one in the same just different computers. Yes I do own a Arctic Cat(2003 400 4x4 Auto red) and I also am an employee at the local Cat dealer(sales, and parts)
