water?: i'm conviced

today i took off across a pond. i was in nipple deep water (i'm 6'2) and it went dead. air box was dry, turned the screw on the carb, drained it, it fired up. water gets in that little drain on the bottom of the carb. i lost my little vacuum cap that catkrazy gave me and i learned the hard way. everybody needs to seal that carb drain. my bike is sealed up tight and snorkeled up to about one foot over the handlebars that is the only open hole. the oil has no water in it. and i'm not too happy with the drain on the airbox. there is a little suction on that airbox plug also. i'm going with a grommet in that hole. just remember to turn your gas off when transporting. i would love to hear any more tips on making the bike water tight.

Are you talking about an ATV or Boat, lol sorry I'm from west coast and none of my friends here would even think about submerging their ATV, What kind of riding do you do?

You got me Catsmeow?? Are you talking the float bowl drain? The one that when you open the screw on the bottom of the carb it lets the gas drain from the float bowl? If so how could water get in if the screw is closed keeping the gas from running OUT?? Is there such a thing as a one way screw to let water in?? How high is your carb bowl vent line?? It should be as high as the air intake.

closing that screw won't keep gas from coming out. the drain (besides letting you empty the carb bowl) also will trickle gas when the bowl gets "over-full". have you ever noticed when you get the front end high for wheelies or turn it up for washing underneath, the drain will let excess gas out. if you ever have your bowl off whatever reason, close the drain screw and squirt some wd40 or something through the nipple and watch it fly out the other end of the drain (wow this is hard to explain).

the carb vent runs just as high as the intake.

EZrider, i don't submerge the bike but, you do often get up to the racks in this soupy mud, that is why the bike has to be sealed up so much. check the pics in the sig for examples!

Guess im lost as well. but i got a mikuni. No water can get in my float bowl via the drain screw.

EZridez: There are times when i (and CM im sure) go over the racks in water crossing ponds, rivers, whatever is in our way. I for one do not want to have to stop on the trail and dry stuff out or risk getting water in my engine.

"click this" This is why I won't even ride in water over 2 inches deep. Were I live I ride in the foothills or Evergreen Forest. I am paranoid of water with my 2004 AC, but this is my first 4x4 ATV, I'm used to riding in sand dunes with a Banshee. Should I be so concerned about water I didn't realize that you could put the engine under water without cracking the block.

P.S. Very cool pics, I had no idea you can do that kind of stuff with a quad ha ha , we don't have anything like that around here. I just use mine for hunting deer and pigs.

I dont doubt what that site says one little bit. Might be happening to my machine right now. But its lasted 5 years of it. I bet your machine outlasts mine.

i think you worry to much.did you buy the extended warrenty. if so ride the hell out of it and dont worry about it.i have freinds that have had quads for five years at least with thuosands of klicks on there quads and did not experance what you did.with the warrenty i got 3 years to ride care free and if somthing breaks they fix it free. and i've got over 1000 miles on my cat. all i have to do is regular maintenance. [oil changes, break pads and shoes and filter care] but other then that its fixed free.ac is a good quad and there just like a timex they take a licking and keep on ticking.ride on buddy and dont worry about the water.ARCTIC CAT RULES.
