Decided on a Cat
#1
I'm new to this forum and new to 4-wheelers. Looking for some edu. from experienced folks. I've decided to buy a Cat. Liked them better than any other I looked at. Not sure I like the auto though. Heard something about belt slipping when you go thru water. Anyone got any feedback on that?

I got my 2003 400 Auto back in April and I have ridden in my share of water. I have never had a problem with the belt. A couple of time when I got home from a ride with lots of water, I removed the drain plug but no water came out. Right now I have just over 1000 miles on my bike and not a single problem. (knock on wood)
Good luck with your Cat.

That helps alot. The dealer I talked to today told me that Cats were sealed and no water could get to the belt. Sounds like you just confirmed what he said. I appreciate the info. Now I just have to decide which I'll like more, auto or manual.

One other interesting thing... My friend got a 2003 AC 400 manual and he gets better gas milage than I do. For me, I still prefer the auto, no need to think in the mud hole just use your thumb. I just carry a 10 litre gas can with me. I also think the manual has a slightly higher top end.

This is good info for me. This is my first quad so I'm pretty dumb about them. I've been reading things in this forum and that's what helped me decide on the Cat. Lots of good info here. Thanks again for the info.

i have a 2003 500i manual and i love it, when i first got it it had the rocker(heal/toe) shifter but i found i kept on stepping on it with my heal and changing into the next gear, so i cut it of and now i'll never switch back its just like riding a dirt bike.and the worst gas milage i got was 20mpg and that was a long hard ride mostly in low range. the best i got was 27mpg and that was a trip 35 klicks down a logging road and back. the most i went in one day was 70 miles and i never hade to go to reserve.and its a 18ltr tank. hope this helps.

With my 400 auto I can get somewhere around 70 miles driving around 30 mph. I think my buddy with the 400 manual can get somewhere around 90 miles.
I don't know for sure cause I always add more gas before I get into the reserve.

The longest ride I went on with my manual 2002 400i was 40 miles and my gauge didnt get under 1/2 a tank.Auto or manual you will still be getting the best quad for your money.Good luck and enjoy your new Cat.
