Maybe you and your dad should give the auto's another look . I was the same as you when I bought my 05 400 manual , I didn't want anything to do with a belt . My dealer tryed to sway me to an auto but I wouldn't hear of it . I wanted a manual tranny period ...
Well about 2 months after I bought my Cat a friend of mine bought an 05 400 Cat aswell except he listened to the dealer and got the auto . Since then we have rode together almost every weekend for about ten months now , through the nastiest terrain that we can find and his "belt" drive auto has not given him a single problem . Believe me , we are tough on these machines , we ride in rack deep water on a regular basis , go boulder crawling up creek beds , pulled/dragged things that are way hevier than the max tow weight and I actually think that overall the auto has the advantage except for maybe pulling extremly heavy loads , although as I said he has pulled upwards of 2000lbs with no belt trouble . The Cat's belt drive is a better design than most and it is completely sealed so deep water is no problem . I am now looking to trade my manual in on a auto . The auto does everything that my manual tranny does and somethings better , like deep snow , sand and steep loose hill climbs . and the biggest reason I want the auto is it is much more relaxing and enjoyable to ride .
Slime is right. The 400 auto is pretty much bullet proof. I ride with a pair of 2004 400 autos and neither have had a lick of trouble with the belt or the tranny.

For all of you that want the low range reverse in a manual without the hassels of the auto which has low range reverse plus the belt slippage, and the problems that Autos have, I am here to say I have the way to fix the WEAK reverse!!! If you are interested in getting the part you need to keep the machine you LOVE or buy the machine you WANT than call me at 612-275-0406. I will tell you how to get what you want!

Yeah, Give us an idea of what you have. Long distances charges suck. But I am super interested.

I know long distance charges can really suck. You can always email me at rdp_chevynut@yahoo.com if calling is not an option. If I seem leary of just coming out and saying what I did it is because I am working with a lawyer currently to patent what I have done and to be honest I am not sure if I want to spend the money on the patent if there is not alot of interest, or just work something out with individuals and getting the product out to them.

There have been alot of hits on this fourm since I put the info in, but no one has come forward other than 2 of you showing interest. Within the people you know how many of them would be willing to pay for an aftermarket part to have what they want? What I did can be done from me for less than $200.00, depending on the number of parts I need to produce vs. doing 1 at a time, and that is not making squat for me. What would you do?

I think I read somewhere in this string that the 'autos' have low reverse? Well, my 400i doesn't have it. Reverse is reverse, and it's not as low as low-range (which has always bugged me). What was AC thinking?

Actually Suzuki designed and built the engine and tanny on the manual. On the auto you would think AC would know better. I was always told rule one of trannys, "Reverse should be as low or lower as your lowest forward gear".
