Just for S & giggles, I thought I'd touch on this old topic, where a few guys were saying they never had a front wheel spin in the air. I of course, told them they hadn't been in the right conditions.

When I took the tires off my 500, I thought I would give it the test. Totally blocked up with no tires touching ground, I grabbed a front wheel and then gave it the gas. As I suspected, I was easily able to hold one tire still while the other spun like hell. It gives a little jerk at first, and then it just stops and you can hold it with one finger if you want while the other just spins.
Once again, limited slip sucks. I guess if I was steering a locked quad around, I would be saying locker steering sucks though so you win some you lose some.

Did you try taping the brakes to see if it worked on your quad?

Not while holding it, I don't care to lose an arm. I've tried it a bunch when riding. Its only good for a short catch and thats it. It catches for a split second and then stops while the other spins. I have found that this is a neat trick to do if you want to see the tire catch momentarily, but I have never had this trick work as far as getting me on up and over something that I am spinning on. I have probably tried it at least 30 times before and nothing.

Andy,I frequent my local riding area alot in the summer and fall months.I cannot tell you how many times I have personally witnessed only one front tire spinning helplessly in the air on limited slip front differentails.I have been known to ''show off'' a few times to.I'll just ride right thru where someone else on a limited slip quad just got stuck.

Of course, the first thing everyone looks at is my Mudrunner tires.Given my choice of limited slip with the Mudrunners,or a locker with stock tires,I'd prefer the locker.

But I need not to worry,I have em both.====Bill

That would indeed be nice. Why doesn't anyone else put a differential like the King Quad has on other quads? That is a mystery to me.

Long time, no see Bill! Glad to have you back. Big Cat- Yeah, that ARB air locker that the trucks use would be great on a quad. I know a few guys who run them in a couple Jeeps, and an old Chevy shortbox. They're an awesome unit. Hopefully ARB will look into expanding their unit to a smaller scale to fit the quad's, then we'd have the best of both worlds.

While I'm sure there are situations where a limited slip front end reveals it's weaknesses, I have not encountered any yet.

Yes , I've gotten stuck - but when the frame is bottomed out in a mud hole I don't care how many tires you've got power to - you're not going anywhere (as my buddy on his magnum 500 can attest to)

I don't do any rockhounding, and that's where I can see a locking differential shine - but for me, I just don't see the neccesity of it.

Having a locking diff. is not the most important thing on a 4-wheeler but it sure is nice to have. I have not had my new machine for very long but I have ridden it on many familiar trails. My old machine was a Honda 300 4x4. great machine but now i can see it's limitations. Having ridden the Honda and gotten stuck in certain spots on trails and then taking my King Quad to those same spots I learned how usefull the locking diff. is. It is great to ride alonf in "regular" 4 wheel drive....get stuck, then lock the front diff. and climb out of it. I have only had my King Quad for 3 months, when I bought it I bought a Warn winch for it. I have not had the need to use it yet. Before everybody jumps on me I will say that a locking diff. does not replace a winch but it does reduce your need for one!!!!

(TheArcher) I understand what you are saying about the advantages of a locking differential, but I'm more interested in speed and handling, so I'll sacrifice the ability to crawl over rocks for the ability to fly over jumps.

BTW - I understand that the winner of the 1999 Rocky Mountain ATV Jamboree Mudbog won it on a machine with a limited slip front end (wolverine).
