Checking Oil level

What is the correct way to check oil on 400 cat. Screwing in dipstick or not to get reading . Thanks

Originally we were told to check without screwing in, at last update we were told to check with it screwed in because they had some problems with being over filled.

My manual for 02 500 says to check with the threads touching the housing, but not screwed in.
