Default Idling Problem 400 Auto

Hi,

I have a 2003 AC 400 Auto. Now that the weather is a bit colder (20-30 F), it seems that I have to leave the choke on a little bit for my bike to idle. Even when it has been running for an hour or more. I just had it to the dealer a few weeks ago and they checked the valve clearance, changed the plug, and adjusted the carb. So it should be setup correctly. Would the idle be set a little low to require the choke to be out a bit?

Also, when I go to start the bike, I open the choke full ... The bike turns over but doesn't start. I then turn the choke completely off and the bike starts and runs for a bit before I have to give it a bit of choke so it won't stall.

Any help would be great!

Thanks

My dad has the same machine....First you must remember that as it gets colder the air is denser...More air and less fuel causes your problem....The jetting is to lean. I would suggest that the jetting is on the lean side form the factory and it is just made worse in the cold conditions. Try one or two main jets bigger and you should be ok. Also the air intake may need adjusted.

I dont know about the 03's but the 04's have a little **** coming out of the back of the carb to adjust the idle speed, you might check that and adjust your idle speed, that helps alot.

Thanks for the quick responses. I was planning to play with the idle adjust screw on the weekend and see if I could get it running better. Now I will for sure.

I was out adjusting my bike ... It seemed I had to crank up the idle too much to get it to run without the choke. I tried taking off the prefilter for my K&N and I was able to run my bike without choke and turned down the idle adjust quite a bit. The air filter is clean, but the prefilter seemed a bit dirty.

It seems to be running better now. I am going for a run tomorrow afternoon so I will be able to test it better. The plug might be a bit fouled since I plowed a couple of times with the choke out a bit to keep it running. I will be running on some open trails tomorrow so that should get rid of any carbon that might have built up.

I got that nickname at an Internet startup company a few years ago and it kinda stuck. No offense taken.
