ARE THERE ANY MODS THAT WILL HELP MY 03 500 KEEP UP WITH A STOCK 650?

You would think if it was that easy AC would of put the locking diff on the 500's too. Unless its a contract thing preventing them from doing it.

I looked into it and it looked really easy to do, but I couldn't find a used 650 diff for cheap.The diff looks really simialar, same width, same mounting points, but the drive shaft conection is slightly different. The axles looked like the same but I'm not sure on the spline count. The gear ratio is 3.6 on the 650's, on 500 autos it is 3.1, on manuals it's 3.6. You would have to hook up some electronics for the 4x4/4x2 unles you swapped you lever over to the 650 diff, pretty simple to hook up the electronics though. Then mount the diff lock lever on the handle bars and go.

OK this is a good thing... let me do some research and I will be in touch.

So what you are saying is.

the 650 ring gear, pinion,and axels are all the same ratio as the 500 manual."the axels would have to be the same spline count to have the same turning ratio."

if this is the case. then why cant you order just the locking device and install it into you diff housing?

Now give me alittle break here, because i have not looked at the break down of the 650 front end yet..but i will .

I am refurring to the spline count on the axles, were they go into the diff side gears. I am not sure if you could just order the 650 carrier and swap it into the 500 diff housing.

i did look at the break down of the 650 diff. If the values are the same as the values available for the 500,then you could order the componets that make up the inner system. In other words. If the Diff housing is the same, then you could remove the existing open diff and insert the locking diif and componets needed , in the 500 diff housing. But thats a big IF. The pinon,housing,cover,avels,and gear ratio would all have to match the 650. It can be done. But a more simpler way but maybe a little more costly would be buy the whole front chunk and place it in the 500. i did see where there id a slight difference in the drive shaft hookup. I am posistive i can fabricate what I need to make my 500 shaft compatible with the 650 gear drive.

Just my 2 cents

you do not neet the entire diff to make this happen. i have a friend that has made the swap and it is working fine. this is what you will need if you have a manual 500i: the ring gear, left side of the diff cover, locker cable, left cv joint. you have to have the cv joint because on the inside of cup there are teeth that lock in place inside the diff when you pull the lever. if you have an auto you will have to change the pinion gear in the front and the back as well as the rear ring gear to have proper gear ratio. that would not be cheap.

Could someone just get the whole CV axel and all and replae it with the existing 500 axel. Just ofr FYI puposes incase noone wanted to full with removing the joint?

and when you say locking cable you mean everything that makes up the locker device... controll nox, lever,cable..etc..???

my dealer said that the entire front end is 1700 cdn.
so why not buy the entire front end and install it rather then peace it together.

Mudblaster.. i posted a thread on the locking sytem..take a look, and yes you are correct, that would be ideal..BUT
will the front chunk of a 650 bolt up to the drive saft mount of the 500??
