Questions about A.C. 454 Bearcat
#1
When did they first come onto the market? How come they discontinued the 454? How's the realiability of this particular machine? Does it have the same features of the other A.C.'s?
(Rocker shifter,High, low, super low range, ect.. )
The reason I'm asking is that my Brother in law says that a friend of his has a 97 model 454 that has 230 miles and is in like new condition and he wants $3100.00 for it. I don't know a whole lot about these machines but for the price it sounds hard to beat. I think I'm going to try to check it out and see if the deals legit. The story is that the guy just hasn't had time to ride and now he's building a new home and needs cash quick. Thanks for any info.

Actually the 400 and 500 are based on the 454. The 454 was replaced for the slightly more powerful 500. It has all the same features of the 99 models but the start in gear and parking brake. There are a few other differences but mostly unnoticable.

here is what I know of the 454. The 1998 model was a big improvement over the 97 model. A lot tighter and easier steering(the main point, a handlebar mounted parking brake (as opposed to the crummy footbrake parking brake lever), better graphics, goodbye to the gold rims, and titan 489 tires instead of the old dunlops.
The 454's had problems with the carbuerator a lot, but a simple adjustment can fix that. As far as power goes, they have tons. I would take that engine over the higher revving honda 450 any day. The suspension is still top notch in comparison with later model AC's as well.
For $3100, I think it is ok. I wouldn't give 5 cents for the 97 2wd though.

Hey Foreman, if you don't want it, let me know!
Just kidding... I really like my 454 4x4. It rides like a Cadillac and has the power of a D5 dozer. It will crawl over just about anything that you point it at.
I could go on and on but don't feel like typing that much. If it's all he says it is, the asking price is pretty good considering that you can't even touch an A/C 250 2x4 for less than $3500.(new) Have a muddy day...
