Has anyone replace a radiator on 2001 AC 500 Manual
#11
Trey; According to my 2001 service manual the fan is only suppose to come on when coolant temp reachs 190-200 degrees and shut off when gets down to 177 degrees. Being on all the time would be very hard on the motor and when the thremostat opened cause larger than wanted engine temp variations. Also the electrical repair sections says to test the fan by hooking it to an external 12 volt power supply.

What section in your manual or what page...I have just borrowed the service manual for all 2001 Arctic Cat ATV's...It is on CD so I have got to go through every section...As with Brent, I can remember that distinctive sound as i turned the key on the fan came on...but then again, maybe it shut off after a few minutes...I had the fan fuse blow once before and remembered not hearing the fan noise when I went to start the CAt and checked the fuse and it was blown and i replaced the fuse and it worked when i turned the key to the on position to start. I will test the fan motor as soon as i get a chance, it has been a little rainy here and the cat stays outside..No room in garage...I have got 3 IH SCOUT II's and a 23ft. Glastron Carlson Signature Series with 350 Merc. Mag I/O...My wife says, too many toys, I say not enough..Oh and I am also an avid hunter..So there is plenty toys out there for me.....Let me know on the page number....Thanks !!!!

I am definitly interested, all ears so to speak. I have only had the quad about 6 weeks, most of which it has had to sit. I just had the chance to finish up all of the spring cleaning type of work (minor odds and ends repairs, new fluids, etc), all the things I do when I get a new toy so that I KNOW what condition everyting is in. If I have a problem I would like to get it niped before I start serious ridding for the summer.
Also, for what it is worth. My dealer struck me as a real sharp guy. He offered and fixed a lot of things I would have accepted as normal wear and tear as the quad was used. A couple of things he even pointed out as I was not familure with the model/brand. If the fan was acting funny I am sure he would have realized it. Then again, you never know.

Trey; It's in section 5, page 5-6. If you have the wiring diagrams you will see there is power to it all the time and the temp switch gives it ground.. I know one way to check if the switch is working. Ride in deep snow untill you pack the radiator full of snow. Will over heat everytime, even in sub-freezing weather.

HI
I have only had my '01 400 2x4 man. for a couple months, but when I turn my key all the way the fan comes on as well. Perhaps they changed something. I bought mine from a friend of a friend and it only has a couple hundred miles on it, but he knows his stuff in the ATV world. I can't imagine that being over looked, so my curiousity is peaked. Keep us posted Trey with what you find out.

I wonder if there was some change along the line. I have to go a 'hunten again but I swear I saw a date some place on my machine. It seemed "early" to me, like late '00. I would have to find it again. I took a look at the parts diagrams over at alpha sports, sure enough I found a temp swith. I have a new plug to swap in this week end, while I am in there I will dig aroud and see if I cen see what the deal is. Even if it failed I would have guessed it to have failed to its at rest state, or open, this providing no ground and no fan.
Interesting
Poor Trey, he came looking for what should have been a black or white answer and all he gets is grey.

tta583; Actually a properly designed switch would fail to the "fan ON" position. That way at least you wouldn't overheat and burn something important up, like your engine.

I would agree, however I am thinking automotive. I just seems that when I have run accross a switch such as this in a car it will fail in its natural state, generally open. Idiot light sending units, some gauge sending units, various control switchs. My favorite ones are relays uses to control electric fans. Most automotive relays are off (open) naturally, then close when voltage is applied. I have seen several overheating problems due to failed relays that remain open thus never starting the fan.
All in all I am sure I am backwards some where along the line. Trying to compare auto to quads is proving to be the old apples to oranges arguement. Never the two shall meet.

If you go into some deep water with your fan running is it not hard on it?? I flip mine on for a few seconds before going into water, that way it shouldnt come on if I have to work it. ANd yea if it fails it will fail to the on position.
