CatsRule; Disconnect the cable from the speedo head and ride the bike. The inner end of the cable should turn. If it doesn't pull the cable loose from the gear box at the wheel and turn one end and the other should also turn, if it doesn't, bad cable. If it does then you have to spin the wheel and watchthe output of the gear box and if the out put turns. If it does the head is bad, doesn't the gear box is bad. Probaly the cable though. Have you ever lubed it with graphite? If not, that's usually the problem.

I took the cable off the speedo and it does not turn. So now your saying take the wheel off and disconect the cable from the gera box and turn the inner thing. Am i correct? If it turns i need a new gear box if it doesnt i just have to go buy a new cable. Sounds pretty easy ill have to try tomorrow after work. Its wierd when you look down to see what your doing and its at zero.

My TRV did that a while back. I disconnected the end of the cable from the gear box (on the engine) then disconnected it from bottom of the speedo. When I turned the shaft everything worked.

THen I unbolted the gear box from the side of the engine and everything turned ok there. Then I looked into where I unbolted the gear box at the shaft that drives the speedometer gear and it was snapped off.

That shaft is called the counter shaft and the entire engine has to be dismantled and the cases split to get at that shaft. I bought the gaskets and such I would need to fix it and then installed an hour meter no longer have a speedo. Only thing useful is the tripmeter and the odometer anyway.

hopefully yours is an easier fix

Mines the 01 model. It just has a speedo and odometer. I think it might be alittle easier than what yours was.

Swampy - Don't the TRV's have a two year warranty that would cover that shaft being replaced?

Mine always came loose down by the bottom of the engine on the left side. Always had to tighten it back up.

WhoDatInDaMud the 2 year warranty promotion thing started 3 weeks after I purchased my TRV. So no its not totally covered. After talking with AC they are covering all the parts but not labor. Its the kind of job that parts are $250 and labot is about $1000.

Besides I would also have to pay about $500 in air freight to get just my engine to and from the dealer to have them do the work. A speedometer just is not worth that to me.

Might fix it myself this winter when I have the time. Too much fishing to do right now.

Sounds like CatsRule's speedometer cable or speedometer gear are busted and hopefully its not that shaft unless his warranty is still good.
