Default 400 arctic cat

Hello everyone I currently own A 1997 wolverine I bought used from a arctic cat dealer I have had nothing but trouble with it. Not saying anything bad about yamahas just got one someone did not take care of. Anyways the dealer I boght it from is an arctic cat dealerhe told me if I trade it back in there he would give trade in what I had in to it. So I was wondering what I should get a 300 or the 400 I've rode both and really cant decide any help would be appreciated.

I would definatly go with the the 400. There are several 400 owners on this forum that are going to give you advice but from my experience with 300's that some of my relatives own, they are under powered. They are very reliable but I think you would be much happier with the 400.

Mikesslowyamaha; Depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you just trail ride or use it to hunt with and aren't a speed freak; then a 300 would probaly do. I have a 250 and gee, I keep up with all the 400's, 500's and even the 650's and 700's on the trails and climbing any hills we come too. On the trails there is no poblem keeping up and hill climbing I do a little differently, smaller engine requires a little more skill and knowledge of your machines capabilities. I can't keep up on the open flat roads and don't care to. I get 42 mph out of my 250, my GPS says so and that's fast enough for me at this stage of my life. I've riden all the bigger bikes and it's more like being "Tim the Toolman", you know "More Power". Usually to help their ego's I think, been there aready done that. The next bike I get will be the 400 because Mama wants an auto that's easier to ride, no shifting on the fly, but I will keep my 250. Oh BTW, when they are out of gas I still have better than a half tank left. Oh yeah, I use to live in Wichita a life time ago and have been to Newton.

CANADIANxREBEL, My young and stupid friend, I raced cars and boats for years and probaly have more time in the potti-potty at races than you have living. I get everything there is out of my gear and I don't need a big engine to step on the over inflated ego's of horsepower freaks. If you read my signature line you will learn something.

Man, calling someone out on your second post. Perhaps you need to find a different place to hang out with that kind of attitiude and mouth.

Any way, I say go for the 400 unless $$ keeps you from it. I am not up on the current line, is the 300 air cooled and sort of "rear engine". Not that it matters, I don't think you will have a problem either way. I rode a 300 and a 400 when I bought my 400. I was leaning toward the 300 as it had selectable 2x4/4x4 and FIS. It was air cooled. The 400 was a little more $$, all time 4x4, 4 link straight axle, and water cooled. The additional power won me over and I liked the water cooling. In my situation I liked the water cooling as I ride at low speed quite a bit at car shows. Any way, like I said, I don't think you will go wrong either way. I think either would have worked just great for me, I just fell for the extra umph.

tta583; The 250 and 300 are both the aft mounted engine/trans/differential and air and oil cooled with optional fan. However the newer 400's are not liquid cooled, but air and oil cooled with a standard fan. The 250 and 300 4X4 also have the extra super low gear to help the smaller engine in nasty places. The 300 and 400 both have selectable 2X4 or 4X4 standard while the 250 is optional and the 400 has a locking front differential lever on the bars, also there is an auto available with a 400 which is my wife's choice and we will be getting one as soon as I finish my physical therapy that starts today.

I have to agree with bear- my 300 stays with all the big bores on the trail- its not how much power you got, its how you ride more than anything. The 300 is a little underpowered for mudbogging but for most anything else its fine. The only downside to the 400 is the amount of heat that radiates off the pipe- it gets really hot on your leg while your riding and that is one thing I really don't like about it. If your set on a auto the 400 is a fine choice and if you can still find an 04 you should be able to get a hell of a deal on one right now. We have one auto left and with the spiffs added to it we are selling them for about 500 more than the 300......
