There are a couple of guys on this forum that have 250, "Bear" & "Fastcat", do a search and look for them, they both have some mods on thiers. That is a nice little ATV.

I found one of the guys Bear4570 check this out for his mods. He has the same year and everything. He also has a fix to your shifter problem. Send him a note and I am sure he will help you out.

I too have a 250 4w4, it's a 2004. I'm not all into the trail/mudding thing (that's what my truck is for!) but I just use my atv as a pit vehicle for my jet ski races (pulling my ski in/out of the water between races, etc). That's the only reason why I got a 250 and nothing bigger, but I do think it'd be cool with a lift on it. The only other time I've used my atv, other than at my races, was in the snow hauling firewood. This thing may be small but it thinks it's a 650 or something, it's a hard worker.
