500 engine ?
#1
Just finished the 10hr breakin on a 500 auto, Changed oil @ 11 hrs. Now I have noticed that once its warmed up to normal temp and given a little throttle I can smell burning oil? There are no oil leaks from the filter or anywhere else that I can tell. It only happens when its given a bit of throttle, dont notice anything when just idling. Was wondering if it could be some blow-by past the rings? (its not burning enough to see blue). The engine was broken in according to the book. Anybody else ever notice this?

i dont think you could break the bike in wrong.actually some people on these forums dont believe in the break in theory.there was an article posted about breaking in the bike and supposedly not necessary .although i broke mine in like you did.could residual oil have spilled on engine when you took the oil filter off.?

Thats what I thought at first but after about four hours of riding it didnt go away, when i got home i checked the engine out and could find no leaks or signs of oil anywhere on it. Just to make sure I took out the pressure washer and gently cleaned the engine off just to make sure. Had my daughter take it out today and followed her around, after it got warmed up I could smell it again (strong) she did also. but only when fully warmed up and when given throttle. Doesnt seem normal.

I wonder if your smelling the stink of the exhaust pipe burning out, Thats a common odor when new and mostly when hot.

could be the muffler, but the unmistakeable smell of oil has me concerned. I will try to get as many miles as possible on it before the warrenty expires. Hopefully if it is anything to be concerned about it should "develop" before then. Thanks for the replies everyone!

The engine and exhuast are "coated" at the factory to prevent rust and oxidation. You can have 10 hours on the unit and not have had it hot enough to burn it off. It is completly normal and should subside soon.
