Gun rack that works.
#1
I've been trying to come up with a gun rack that would work for me for over a year. I hate the plastic boxes that don't give you easy access. Finally came up with this for less than$35 for both sides( 2 guns) on the quad. Works real well and even without the hold downs strapped across the butt the guns haven't had one fall out even with some of the ravin crawling I've been doing. Best part it was very cheap, removes easily for non-hunting times and stores in a 8x6x6 inch box. To see them look at my page.

That is not a bad idea. The only problem I can see would be that your weapon might get very muddy depending on what type of terrain you have to ride through to get to your hunting spot...Nice work though.

looks like a good setup to an extent (maybe you can elaborate a little and sell me on it so to speak) the only thing I would worry about and maybe I just am to stupid to see the obvious in the pictre but how is the muzzle of the barrel protected because it looks like there is just a tube (PVC?) on the front fender with out a way to secure it there wouldn't that allow the barel to flop around under rough conditions possibly damageing the crown? Not trying to start anything I am just tring to figure out how I want mine and am hoping that your idea is just what I am looking for. James

PINKMOON; The mud and water issue is worse in my case because my wife says if she hunts with me she rides in style, foot rest and all. So my rear seat requires the rear gun mount to be mounted far outboard om the fender protector rail instead of in the center of the outboard section of the rear rack where the gun is very well protected. Besides my hunting guns are for hunting and will stand up to a little mud and water. Out here in the Northwest they have to.
pangborn83; You are not stupid but I am remiss in not having elaborated on the muzzle protector. The cup is bolted to the fender with an elevator bolt, a broad flat head better the an inch across and thin and flat. The foam cup is a beer insulator and inside that I have a round piece of leather at the bottom to protect the muzzle from the bolt head. Instead of a cup, I already had them, you could use a piece of PVC with a cap on it. Oh yeah, be sure and make a drain hole on the bottom lower edge or the rain or other water will make your cup runneth over. I came up with this deal from shooting Sporting Clays with guys who have golf carts and golf bag carriers modified with mounts similar to this to carry their shotguns, and some of these guys have major bucks into the guns, like better than $10,000 for a few of them. I am way cheap and use a Winchester auto.

I too am cheap I own nothing but remmington, mossberg and winchester riffles and shotguns but I know I don't want to have to replace them (though I do have a pretty nice remington 700 for varmint hunting), I do have one idea but am unsure of how well it will work but since I am thinking of trying to make a gun rack for my ac maybe a smaller diameter piece of steel tubbing or pvc then use the foam padding idea for the inside of that not sure how solid it would be but maybe that is an option I can explore for mine as I was thinking of trying to make a non enclosed unit that runs the length of my quad just like what yours does out of curriosity where did you get the one for the rear it that one of the ones like dennis kirk sells for mounting the gun streight accross the front racks?

pangborn83; Well, the wife and I do have a few high dollar rifles and pistols that go to the range about once a year. She does have a Remington 700 bdl lefthand in 270 Win. that's her favorite hunting rifle along with a Ruger 44 carbine. Me, I have several favorites, a Ruger No.1, a Marlin 1895 both in 45/70 and a Ruger Redhawk in .41 mag.along with a Springfield Champion 1911. Now she has a couple of real expensive pistols, a custom Colt Officers in Polished stainless, a Detonics and an H&K 45 Compact. But most are for using and we do. The rear mounts are just the standard gun holders the would go on you front rack. You can't see it in the pic, but I do still have a set there. Usually has a machete in them rather than a gun though. The Northwest has a lot of brush.

that sounds good I think tommorow after work I am going to go kick around in the hardware store and see what I can come up with for a front but I derffinatly think a beer holder just might be the ticket for inside for a little cushion. I'll let you know what I come up with if I do get something together I just really want something easily accesible but protected at the same time thanks for your time and idea of how I may accomplish my goal, James

well if you dont mind haveing your gun bounce all to hell and beat up your front sights and maybe knock your scope out of wack.
and dont mind getting it wet when it starts raining and your 20 miles away from your truck.
and takeing a chance on getting mud or somthing inside your gun.
then ya its cool.
but i like my gun store bought scabbert i just take the top off and bungie strap it to my back seat and if it starts to rain i can put the top on and it stays dry.
and its ajustable so you can have it strait up and down or you can lay it flat so you dont have to lift it so high when taking it out.
the way i ride, with that setup my gun would fly off and be in the toolys somwhere.

Mudblaster; I hate the big plastic suckers cause with my bad bad and having surgery on both arms and hads I can't get the gun out fast or quiet. I have lens covers for the scope and the muzzle is covered and you better not be able to get mud in the action with the bolt closed. The gun doesn't bounce andywhere and comes free quiet and fast, even for the passenger. I never have worried about a dry gun, the D*mn thing better work in the rain or what's the point.
