Default New 2005 650

I just purchased a new 650 on monday. From what i can tell, it will be an awesome machine. Feels like 3x the machine compared to my 03 500i manual that i traded in. I have only a few questions for you guys who are familiar with auto tranny's, since this is my first auto im not familiar with the caracteristics with it. My first thing im curious about is when in hi and you give it gas, it feels like the cat is stalling or the belt is slipping. It will eventually gidde up but takes about 3 seconds to really go. when im in low it does not do it. Is this a belt problem or is it the way it is supposed to be? The other thing im curious about is about my winch off my 2003 ac 500i. I took it off before traded it in, in hopes of installing it on my 2005. I know the winch will mount up but will the wiring and the cylinoid work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 04 650 cat did the same thing till I adjusted the belt deflection. It acted like the belt was slipping in the clutch's. After i took out one shim it quit doing it. I also had to adjust my shifting linkage it wasn't going into gear all the way.

my 04' never did the belt thing, so i couldnt help there, but all the electrical from your 03' should definitely work, the only thing that might be different is the mounting plate required for the 05's.

i thought they fixed this belt problem for 05 but to replace the secondary spring you need a clutch compressor or if you are handy you can rig up a compressor kit using a lag bolt and some pvc pipe or regular pipe is what i did i know there are charts i got on the kawi forum for this. and the shims they are talking about is that when you take the bolt out that holds in your secondary clutch there are two shims i personlly took out the larger of the two but most people find that taking out the smaller one does very well and may i suggest a pink primary spring those are very easy to replace.

Jolly, is there anything in your manual about running in low range below 35 mph? This has never made any sense to me but I've heard many say that with the 650's your not supposed to run in high range unless you're going 35. Something about wearing the belt.

And who spends much time over 35???

The 650's can hit 40MPH easy in low range. It's just easier on the drivetrain to run in low range as much as possible. If your gonna be running on an old railroad grade, for example, then you can use high range. Yes, running in low will save wear and tear on your belt.
