'04 650 cold start and choke cable problems
#12
That's great news. You mentioned earlier that there is grease in the choke cable housing that binds the cable in cold weather.
(1) Is it difficult to get to that housing? Where is it located? The dealer said he had to tear half the bike apart to replace the cable?
(2) Should I power lube all the cables?
Thanks for the help!

It's located on the left side of the machine. It's easiest to remove the left side panel. Once that is off locate where the choke cable is and follow it to the housing where it will connect with the two cables that go to the carbs. Pull back the cover and clean out (all) of the grease. There is a vast assortment of cable lubes out there. I've had the best results with the ones that have teflon in them.
If you are using a winch alot, it probably would'nt be a bad idea to get an 18 amp battery. Especially with the big V-twin. Also, that extended warranty covers everything your 6 month manufacturers warranty covers. After the intial 6 months , there is a fifty dollar deductible for each service visit. Hope everything works out!

One more thing. If you do get a new battery, make sure it gets a full 8-10 hour 1.5-2.0 amp charge before it is used in the machine. Failure to do so will greatly decrease the life of the battery.

Hey arcticmech, has ac issued or do you know of a better carb calibration for our climate/winters here in wisconsin. It seems like his 650 even cranked over much longer than normal to start this fall when temps were 45-50 deg.'s. He is going to pick it up from the dealer tomorrow morning so we will see if the choke is finally fixed! But I still think the carbs arent right. My polaris 600 sportsman was even more cold blooded than his when I first got it, you couldn't start it below 40 degrees and ride it with out constantly thumbing the throttle for about 10-15 min's to keep it running. then after I recalibrated the carb as per the polaris update you could set the choke, start it and walk away in any temp! My friends 650ac won't stay running when first started cold either... with out thumbing the throttle. And he can't seem to get the choke set just right for it to keep running on its own when first started. Just wondering if cat has issued any bulletins or if you know of any help for this. Thanks, Dan.

I looked through all of the bullitens and could'nt find anything. I've never had a 650 that I did'nt have to bump the throttle to help it start. But after it started in less than 2-3 seconds they always idled on their own. Make sure your idle is set correctly afer the engine is warmed up. Spec is 1350rpm +or- 100rpm. If it is set too low, it won't want to idle when it is cold.
