broken belt, clutch kit & spring
#21
the springs were a must for when i got into alot of deep mud and grass and water combined i would try to finess my way around and the belt would constantly slip before now it is good not as good as the arctic cat clutching but liveable. and i guess beings you have the clutch puller for the primary clutch it will be easy to remove the belt but i was able to do it by using my fingers and alot of praying for if you aren't careful you can slice your fingers pretty bad. you will see when you get in there. instead of pvc pipe to make the compressor tool i used an actual metal pipe that way you don't have to worry bout the pvc pipe giving out but good luck with this if i can do it you can do it it isn't that hard just time consuming on the secondary.

ok, got springs in today, got it all back together and i have belt squel when i put it in gear. i guess the shims where the pieces between the pully. there were only two and the same size. took one out. i can't tell any diff between springs cause i didn't want ride with the belt squeling. what did i not do right???isgust

If it squeels a little at idle in gear is a good sign,it means the belt is tight. It should go away if you put it in neutral. If it is not hard to put in gear or crawls along on it's own it's perfect.

I have titan 589 tires on Polaris xplorer I installed a comet hpq clutch with big foot clutch kit, because of the more aggressive tread and they are 6 ply. I did not check taper of new clutch with taper of shaft on motor. It is going to be hard to remove someday. The clutch kit was suggested to me when tires were changed from stock. I have similar problem with belt slippage if I am in high range climbing hill and low range is only good up to certain speed. It is hard to set up clutch to be good in both high and low range.

What's your belt tension? What shim did you remove? Keep in mind that belt squeeling is acceptable, but not necessarly considered normal operation.

Springs are a nice addition, you will not regeret changing them, but proper belt deflection and maintenance is a must.
A few things that will give you some good belt milage. (my odometer is at 650 miles and I'm still running a stock belt)
1) Clean both the primary and secondary with brake cleaner.
2) Only use small amounts of grease while installing the dowels in the secondary. Grease should not be used anywhere else.
3) Belt width - min 29 mm
4) Belt tension - 23mm-24mm range
5) A minimal amount of cherping on occasion is a good thing.
6) The belt will usually slip on the primary first, so that's were a stiffer spring will make a uge difference.
Shims come in 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.4mm thick. For every 0.1mm shim, deflection will change by approximatly 1.45mm with a stock belt.
Good Luck!

Hello sir, I just did this. Black secondary spring and pulled the .8 spacer, left the .6 in there. Question on your #2 comment, why only lightly grease the dowel? What will/could happen?
I put some moly grease on the entire little dowel body then some in the slides, I then slid it back and forth a bit to squish out the excess and wiped it out. So what can happen with too much grease in there?
Thanks

Cat should have gone all the way with parting together an ATV; Polaris frame, Yam tranny, Kawi engine, Kawi SRA. Then they would have really had somthing.
