Default 500 CDI

I was just looking over on arcticchat and there is someone over there that is selling their 05 400 Cat and he has put a CDi from a 500 into it, what would you have to do to get this to work and what gains from it?? I pm'd the person there but want to find out as much info on this as possible, thanks for any help., and I am sure that there are other 400 owners that would like to know also. Would this work with an 03??

You would have to look at the two advance curves to see what improvement it would get you if any. It may be just a unplug and plug in or at the most buy the 2 different plugs and make an adapter.

Well, I did a little checking and they are different boxes. The initial advance is the same in the Cat manual. No max or curve chart given. Try going to the after market sites and see if any of them have a comparision chart between the stock box and their own CDI box. BTW the 500 CDI box from Cat is almost $400 USD and would seem to be not the way to go as the aftermarket CDIs are a lot cheaper. I would believe that the aftermarket 500 box would be much more agressively curved than a stock box for any engine. And the adapter plug set up is very eazy to do.

I emailed Procom and asked them if it would work, I have this same question posted on a few other sites and one guy has a procom that he is selling and has offered it to me, but I want to make sure it will work and not wreck anything. I was on hilifter site and went to dyno runs 400 dyno run
500 dyno run

is this what you were talking about? and an adapter plug set, wouldnt it just plug straight in? Thanks for the help Bear4570.

Those are Horsepower curves. You want ignition advance curves. Instead of "HP vs speed or rpm"; you want "degrees of ignition advance vs rpm".

So here is the scoop, I got a reply from him, and he said his CDI was fried in his 400, so the dealer literally pulled one out of a 500 that they had for sale and plugged it into his bike, said he got a lot more torque and some more power, now I just need to find out if an aftermarket would work.

Have him get the part number off the CDI box, because as far as I can find the plugs are different. If the box was bad to sart with on his 400, then a good one would feel like a stronger unit.

Ok I asked him for the part number, where can I look at part numbers for these things?? If the connection is different, that would be easy to change?? Would the wire colors be the same?

The adapter plug if necessary is a matter of looking up the parts to swap out the old plug for the new. Look at Browns leasure worls web site for parts info and cost.

Just choose the year and then model. If it was a matter of just plugging is the 500's CDI then I think it would have already been discussed and done. The aftermarket guys would be advertising for it. The 400 is AC's biggest seller.
