Hopefully it is not the CDI but what you are stating sure sounds like it. My Plug readings were all over the place, the carb was torn down & cleaned & rechecked 5 times. The valves were checked but they were OK. It only acted up after everything got warmed up, ran great when cold.
Of course that $350 for a New CDI was back in '01, not sure what they cost in Today's Dollars.

Going to be at the cabin this weekend. Going to try plug first. If it still runs bad, like I said I can swap out my buddy's CDI from his 400 (same p/n) and try that. Lucky I get to try one before forking out the 375$. Man, and I need a stator for my sled before the snow flies too.................sounds like an expensive fall coming up.

Yeah sorry I never posted an update. I ended up trying a whole new carb, new voltage regulator. Got the update shorter air snorkel.

It turns out it was the radiator getting clogged and needed to be power washed after EVERY ride. It was basically overheating, when I am wide open it was fine, as soon as I started riding twisty trails it would die. After sitting for 1/2 hour it would fine for a while.

Now I take the screen off and flush the fins on the radiator and it seems to be fine now.

have you bypassed the fan relay to make it a constant running fan? thats what most of the 97s have because they would over heat and had issues with the fan coming on at the correct time. I have 2 97 454s 2x4 and my grand father has a 97 454 4x4, one of my 97s has a constant running fan because we by passed it and it works great an has over 14,000 miles on it, my grand fathers 4x4 witch is like new with 700 miles still triggers the temp light every once and a while, but my 2x4 with over 14,000 hard miles on it still runs and drives like new.

Yes the relay was bypassed. The fan runs all the time.

My problem is I ride gravel roads alot with a bunch of guys on hopped up sport machines. I tend to look for mud and water to ride through which leaves my machine wet. Then while riding on the roads I tend to always be bringing up the rear and in a huge dust cloud. I think that makes it stick to the coolign fins real bad.
