anyone think one is better than the other? im going to buy a new winch and i havent decided rather to get it with synthetic rope or a cable. is rope supposed to be better (because it cost more) or the cable? i think cable is just fine but would like to know how well the rope works after getting in mud,sand,and water. thanks for the input.

 

I think the ups of the rope are lighter, wont bind or kink, rust over time, or kill you if it snaps! But ive never heard anyone really complain about cable and its been reliable for however many years its been around. I wont spend the money on the rope unless I win some extra money or my cable gives me enough reasons to switch

 

Go with the rope,if you have a chance.You will not regret the cost!alot of big trucks are going to it for many reasons,which some were mention above.it will strench also,also it will not cut your hands like cable,and yes always wear gloves with cable or rope! Good Luck

 

never had any experience with the rope but with the cable i have used it ALOT!! and i have never had any issues so i guess that shows that even if you use cable alot it will stand up.

 

thanks all, i havent bought it yet but was just trying to figure out which would be better. i have a 2500lb warn now,but its shot. im goin to get the 3000lb b/c its supposed to be sealed plus i could use a bit more poundage.

 

A downside of synthetic rope is that it may chafe if rubbed on rocks when winching. You also need a aluminum or UHMW fairlead with synthetic rope. Synthetic is stronger and will NOT stretch, therefore no recoil. No gloves are needed for freyed strands of steel cable. Synthetic is less prone to "burying" into itself on the drum.

Have any of you using synthetic had a hard time installing it on your drum? I've heard that often the synthetic cable isn't meant to fit into the hole on the drum forcing may people to use tape or knots to attach it to the drum. I've also heard that the synthetic lines are easy to splice together. Has anyone out there had to?

 

I have not installed mine yet, because I'm still snow plowing. In talking with Bryan at BC-OFFROAD (where I bought mine), he said that it installs exactly as the steel cable does (uses the steel insert). NOTE: if your steel cable is 3/16", purchase synthetic rope of the same diameter (1/4" rope is too large for drum hole on a 2.5ci, and not all 50' will fit on the drum).

The center of the synthetic rope is hollow, so I feel that splicing would be relatively easy.

 

I have been using the steel since 1999, and it sucks. I have so many pokes in my hands, binded cabels, and worring about it braking and snaping back and hitting me. This summer I am getting the Amsteel one. It is better in every way IMO. Steel works, but Amsteel is better. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

 

What kind of lights are those,and how did you connect the strap,smart thinking there,are the lights on only when you back-up, thanks. Running a 60" county plow on mind. no problem putting the rope on mind and the 50' did fit on it.a warn 2500.
