05 650V2 downhill question
#1
I took my cat to the dealer to get it worked on. But they didn't fix the problem. So i'm going to ask it here.
When I go down hills in Low 4 wheel or 2 wheel. When I go down hill and the engeion break kits in the bike will jerk jerk jerk then if it goes fast enough and can't hold the bike back, it will just free spool and not hold me back at all until I slow down enough for it to kick back in then it starts jerking....If I barley touch the gas it will stop. It will do this in high and low 4 wheel or 2 wheel
If i'm on flat gound and just let off the gas it will not do this....only when going down hills. How can I fix this???
thanks,
Cruff

Both my 04 and 05 650's did the same thing. That is the only down fall of the Kawi engine break. The only thing that may help is to take out one of the secondary clutch shims to help tighten the belt. I have learned going down steep grades to give it just that little bit of throttle to engage the solenoid and every once in a while you have to ride the brake. The Duramatic tranny that is on the 400 & 500's, is a much better set-up and works flawless on steep hills.

I have no problem with surging or free spooling going down hill, mine feels perfect. I do have new clutch springs and shimed the clutch for proper deflection but the clutch acted fine before. One of my friends with a Grizzly was quoted as saying that he wishes his engine braking worked so well.

I have never had the clutch cover off either of my 650's but there are many owners on here that have done the secondary shim removal. I just learned that a little throttle control can make all the difference. I'm not exactly sure how much your 650 is free wheeling but it sounds like what you described is how mine acts when going down a very steep grade. The next time you go out, try squeezing the throttle just a hair and make sure you are in 4x4.

It could be that your belt is loose, but if the bike is operating correctly, it should never free-wheel when going down a hill. The servo on my engine break actuator died at about 700 miles, and was replaced under warrenty. It took a little convincing for the dealer to change it because he didn't have a hill to test it on. On a flat surface, there is, of course, normal engine breaking, but the Kawi engine break actuator has no effect until the primary clutch disingages, the bike speeds alittle while coasting down a hill, and the actuator kicks in to "re-engage the primary". That's why, when something is wrong with the engine break actuator, if you blip the throttle coasting down a hill, you get some mometary engine breaking.
All that to say, I think your dealer is missing something.
Does the engine break actuator re-set when you shut off the key? When my actuator went, it stopped making the re-setting noise that it is supposed to a few seconds after you turn off the key.
I would start by making sure that you belt is in proper deflection, it should be between 22 and 27 mm (as close to 22mm as you can get). That is extremely important for these V2's.
Hope that helps.

Just got my 2004 650 this week from an individual. I noticed the the same thing. Finally, I discovered by just barely pushing the thumb throttle a little, the engine would break going down hills. However , it is temporary, I too had to hand brake and hit throttle some to keep from free wheeling.
