Badcat,
the Cat come out of its own 4 holes he dug but the Sportsman had to be pulled out?I'd have to say that the Sportsman rider was certainly not an experienced rider,or the holes he dug were alot worse than that of the Cat.Common sense and experience tells me that 4 wheels pulling for you are better than 3. Change riders and the results might of been differant? What ya think, maybe?

I hate to be a smart_ss on this one, but just couldn't resist. If the 'Cat and the SP both pulled equally on each other, thus going nowhere in a hurry, and both machines dug 4 complete holes, isn't it far to say that both machines are pulling with 4 wheel drive, not 3? Seems to me that if the 'Cat was only using 3 wheel drive, he'd only have dug 3 holes, with the fourth pressed high up in the fender or something.

Now to stand up for the SP not getting out of his own holes, is it possible that while unhooking he dropped back into 2wd, then didn't select 4 wd when trying to come out? I know you need the rear wheel slippage to engage it, but does it disengage itself, or do you push that button again? Sorry for the ignorance here, not exactly sure how the sensors work on the SP's. I have buried the rear end of my 'Cat before, to use as an anchor while winching, then forgot to put it in 4 wheel to pull out, just sat there spinning before, that's the only reason I assume maybe he wasn't in 4wd.

Anyway, like I said, just having fun with this one, hope nobody gets upset.

Take care,

Mike

G force is G force, if a Polaris cleans up pulling a sled of dead wieght than it would clean up when pulling anything eles its tied to.

Like Cowboy said the Cat on flat ground will spin all 4 tires, seen it time and time again. I have a brother that has a 2000 Cat with 27x12x12 Vamps all the way around did a pull off on hard grassy ground and dug 4 even holes front and back. I would say on Flat ground it pulls on all four, so sp 500 would not have the advantage there.

Cowboy, I agree with you. For some reason many of the Polaris owners think Honda, CAts, others are only have 3wd. Not true, too much miss information going around. On level ground all 4 wheels are pulling not 3.

I agree with both of you.

Misinformation is the lifeblood of the ATV Connection. hehehe. I mean where would we be without the offend and defend on a daily basis?

A FAQ could be published and forums would not be needed. (Anyhow, ... my dog is better than your dog.) LOL

Thor,

I know this is off subject however I am going to ask anyways.

One of the magazines reported that the HO skid plate is plastic? Is it plastic or metal?

thanks

It's plastic. Arctic Cats are too, but they have a better skid plate if you ask me, only about 2 small holes compared to the Sportsman's skid plate.

I've seen this happen with an Explorer 400 that had stock tires. It was being used as a winch point for a sportsman 400 to winch to. Well it was being draged toward the hole so he started spining his tires(all 4) and dug some ruts that were not deep enought for the rim bead to be hidden. Well when he tired to pull out of the ruts(with the winch unattactchted) he had ALOT of trouble getting out. He had to rock the bike side to side turning the handle bars to climb out of his MAYBE 4" deep ruts.

I THINK this is cause of the stock dunlops on both Polarises(400 and 500 sportsman). They seem to dig ruts but not climb out of them like the 489s do on an Arctic Cat.

PS. Cats do spin 4 wheels MOST of the time. I remeber trying to pull my out my dad's 1-ton truck with my cat when I had the stockers on. It would not stop pulling 4 wheels at all in that, even moveing side to side( I was hooked to a chain in the back and making "half moon ruts" from the tires).
