Default 500 and mud and dirt in the intake

Ok, after getting my quad completely clean and finally making it to the airbox, i noticed that there was water and dried mud in there to. There was more mud in the hole closest to the front, and a lot less in the bigger one, but some in there none the less. I know this has to get cleaned out of there, what is the best way of doing that, and is there anything else to look for as far as maybe damage done. And how bad could this be for my quad, i will note it starts fine and runs fine. Any help appreciated.

Josh

I would suggest you pull the air box off the carb and remove it from the quad and hose it down inside. Let it dry and reinstall.

I also have a 500 auto 2005 water came into the air box, which got into the crank case breather tube. It has now ruined my motor. Have you ever heard of this problem happening?

If you get water or debris in your intake system or carb or into the crankcase you need to do something about it ASAP. Carbs get cleaned and rebuilt and all the intake system gets cleaned out. Water or debris in the crankcase MUST be removed. Change oil and filter several times until no trace of water. If nothing else, drain the oil and filter and flush the crankcase with kerosene and fill with use new oil and filter. Run for a short time (an hour or 2) and change oil and filter again. Yes, water in you oil will ruin your motor. Water in the air box can ruin your cylinder walls and rings.

HickFisher,

As was already stated...Get that water and junk cleaned out. The faster the better.

Bear is 100% correct on the damage that crud can cause. My experience this last year with getting water into my oil (presumably through the crank case vent tube) on my 400 was not good. After doing some swimming and mudding with my 400 she checked out fine. One month or so later when the temps dropped to below freezing the water foze in the oil cooler blocking oil flow. We all know what that causes!

Needless to say it took about $1300 in parts to repair the tp end on the engine. My lesson learned was to ALWAYS check the bottom of my intake baox after each ride through deep stuff. If I even suspect water got into the crank case and oil. I pay the $30 and change the oil and filter. It is far cheaper than the alternative.

I clean my air box by removing it and spraying it with Armor-All cleaner degreaser, scrubbing with a long handled brush and hosing it out. I might add that I had to change the way the box bolted in as the rubber grommeted screws that hold it in place are not the best.

You may also need to clean the little flapper valve ionthe bottom of you intake box and check that your intake lid seals the box tight.

Hope this helps.

SJ
