I have a 2003 400 Act and i was wondering what the best oil to use is in the crankcase. I was thinking using 0w40 sythetic spectro with a k&n filter or should i stick with the stock change kits.lso what are some good fuel antifreezes to use in cold temps i am now going to college in maine and itll get really cold. Thanks

 

O-40 is an excellent choice, but i would get 0-40 Amsoil synthetic, as its the best you can get[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]
Also, i have a K&N filter, and am happy with it. I bring my stock filter along incase it gets really dusty. Otherwise, you can get an outerwear for it i think. Just keep it regularily cleaned and reoiled, and you will be fine

Also, ive never had my fuel freeze up, i just keep at least half a tank in it at all times, and let it warm up for about 10-15min before riding. I know about cold, i ride in Northern Minnesota alot!

For Oil I usually use the Kits AC sells with the oil and filter. I think the sythetic kit is 0w40 (1 gallon) and AC filter. Personally, I think its about the easiest way to go. There is a bad rumor going around that if you run synthetic oil you only need to change the oil every 500-1000 miles or more. I think you should let the type of riding you do dicate when oil changes occur not the oil type.

For oil filters I have also used NAPA oil filters. Non-AC Filter numbers for 400/500:

NAPA GOLD #1359
STP # SMO-18
Fram # ph6018

If you need different brands cross reference them at an auto parts store. I have found these to run about $6 each compared to $12-14 for the AC brand.

For fuel I use Seafoam. It is a cleaner, antifreeze, fuel dryer, and stabilizer all in one. And, don't bother with putting premium fuel in your 400. It does not need it.

Also, if you do a bunch of riding in the winter in dry powdery snow, check your air filter regularly as mine seems to ice up from the snow getting sucked into the air intake. Then it freezes on the filter and chokes the engine out.

You would do well to use the Amsoil filter. It's a nanofilter meaning it filters down to (I believe) 15 microns, while the BEST other filters may only go to 35 microns. Check here.

thanks for the advice and the reason i was asking about the best oil is i want the best lubrication witht the best performance... is amsoil that choice? Also wont a 15 micron filter clog faster? and amsoil is synthetic right?
