Chains or not
I have never used shains on ice don't see why you couldn't. It has been my experience that if there is a little snow of frost on the surface of the ice I can get enough traction without chains. If the ice gets really wet maybe you could use chains.
I use chains when plowing, mostly late in winter when the snow tends to be really wet just prior to the spring thaw.
I bought car tire chains and modified them for size to fit my ATV. I picked them up ar garge sales in the summer for a couple of bucks. (I think I have $15 into 4 chains)
My ATV does not turn real well on ice unless I am in 4x4 and watch my speed. You also have to be careful about sliding sideways and catching the tires on a rough spot in the ice (like an old fishing hole) as this can cause the ATV to want to roll over.
Hope this helps
